Come discuss American literature, culture and sociopolitical issues of the early 1960s. Postmodernity can be localized around 1962 when Thomas Kuhn's launched his idea of "paradigm change." We will apply this idea to changes in the American experiences of the Cold War, the peace movement, postmodern art, civil rights, women's rights, environmentalism and mental health treatment as seen in such works as Dune, The Feminine Mystique, Revolutionary Road and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Contrary to common belief, Christmas is a fairly young holiday, so how did we go from almost no festivities to Mariah Carey's Christmas album? This presentation will discuss the origins of Santa, Christmas Trees, gift giving, and many other popular Christmas festivities we enjoy today, and it will examine the massive cultural shift that took place with Victoria, Albert, and Charles Dickens - who, together, essentially invented "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Sequoyah and His "Talking Leaves" - GP In-Person
Sequoyah was a Native American "polymath" of the Cherokee Nation. Impressed by European written languages, he began creating a Cherokee writing system. His creation is among the few times in history an individual from a pre-literate group created an original, effective writing system. We will learn more about his contributions and maybe learn a few Cherokee words and phrases. Fee: $10.00

Sultana: An often-overlooked disaster on the Mississippi River - GP In-Person
In April 1865, the Civil War is over, and Union POWs are ready to go home after surviving the horrors of the POW camps at Andersonville and Cahaba. However, their challenges are not over. They board the steamboat Sultana for the trip upriver. On a dark night north of Memphis, tragedy strikes leaving many dead and others fighting for survival in the cold, swirling Mississippi River. Join OLLI for a personal tour of the Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum. The goal at the museum is to educate visitors by honoring Mississippi aviation heritage and the heroes that forged it, from the Delta to the Gulf Coast and from the Alabama line to the Mississippi River.
