Polaroid Emulsion lifting is a technique that separates the thin layer of photo emulsion from the Polaroid frame. Once freed, it behaves like a delicate fabric that can be manipulated into unique configurations and transferred to another material, such as glass, wood or paper. These are a few products of the avant-garde movement in the 20th century, a period that challenged composers to reinvent traditional notions of music, sound and even noise. Our seminar will consider some of the motivations behind these works in hopes that listeners might gain a new appreciation for some of the most perplexing (and fun!) works of the last century.
