A New, Exotic Insect in Hattiesburg! Ecology of the Two-Spined Trap-Jaw Ant - HB In-Person
The two-spined trap-jaw ant, Odontomachus haematodus, is a ground-nesting ant native to South America that has been introduced to Mississippi. We will talk about why this ant is so interesting, how to identify it and discuss the research our lab is doing with this species at the Peck House here in Hattiesburg! Come and learn about some amazing ants you can find in your own backyard.

At the end of 2024, Mississippi lawmakers were still searching for a starting point on AI legislation, with our state as one of 20 without even AI guidelines. This seminar will briefly cover the magnitude of artificial intelligence, its rapid transformation, how it can be used well and misused and legislation needed to be at the forefront of "a new digital species" while also protecting Mississippians.

Learn how a Field to Forest Farm has been built over the years. Visitors will have firsthand experience on site from Anthony and Leilani Rosenbaum. Each visitor will find something to incorporate where they live. They will be able to see how important it is to be observant of the natural ecosystem and work with it. Ice Ages Through Time - HB In-Person
There have been at least five major ice ages in the past 2 billion years. Hypotheses exist to explain both large-scale ice ages and smaller ebbs and flows. Crucial factors include: atmospheric composition, changes in earth orbit, plate tectonic, variations in solar output, the dynamics of the earth–moon system and the impact of large meteorites and volcanism. We will explore these possibilities and I will tell the exact year of the next ice age (or NOT!).
