Immigration Enforcement under Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, 1933-1940 - HB In-Person
Until 1940, immigration enforcement fell upon the Secretary of Labor. Under FDR, Frances Perkins, the first female cabinet member and Secretary of Labor, used her position to try to help German-Jewish refugees escape Nazism. We will discuss the ways Perkins tried to help Jewish refugees, obstacles she encountered, and FDR's decision to move immigration enforcement to the Justice Department prior to the US's entry into WWII. During the mid-19th century, many developments were being made in visual art forms. This course looks at how 19th Century visual art forms such as photography and freak shows portrayed Black bodies and life as disabled, deviant, and fugitive as a way to encourage white superiority, and how fugitive slave authors responded in narrative form, thus altering the American fugitive slave narrative genre. Women of the Mercury 13 Space Program - HB In-Person
The Mercury 13 space program tested women who hoped to be among the first women in NASA during the Cold War's space race. We will watch a documentary about these independent, brave and fearless female pilots from WWII who proved they could physically and mentally go to space. But NASA said no. These women paved the way for future female astronauts, and, in 2025 for the first time, there were more women than men in NASA's astronaut class. Fee: $10.00
