Edith Wilson secretly served as the nation's chief executive from October 1919, when her husband, President Woodrow Wilson, suffered a stroke, until the end of his second term in March 1921. Many historians have called her the first "acting" female U.S. President. Before coming to Mississippi, German emigre Charles Heartman was a well-known rare book dealer, foreign correspondent in the Balkans and society reporter for The New York Herald. In 1936, he moved to Hattiesburg and bought 400 acres south of Hattiesburg, naming his estate "The Book Farm." The Rise and Fall of the Tung Oil Queens: A Forgotten Gulf South Story - HB In-Person
In the 1950s tung nut orchards bloomed across the southernmost Gulf South, yielding an important cash crop for the economically challenged region. Oil from the nuts was an international commodity. Tung Oil Queens reigned over Tung Oil Festivals. Promoters of "tung tourism" lured visitors to the area to view the "pink clouds of Dixie." By 1969, the industry was dead. Yet, within the last few years there have been new glimmers of tung life. Fee: $5.00
