Whether you’re brand new to chess or looking to sharpen your skills, this class is for you. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of the game, while all students will explore key tactics for winning material and delivering checkmate. Players will also deepen their understanding of opening principles and the basics of positional play. The instructor will meet each student at their level and provide individualized challenges to help everyone improve. Instructor Bio: Lawrence Johnson is an experienced instructor and chess player who has been involved with the game throughout his life. Prior to joining the NSCF, he worked in New York City schools for many years. Lawrence has experience teaching adults and children alike. His personal highlight over the board was beating Grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric in a simul, when the Yugoslav Grandmaster was at the height of his powers!

In this introduction to Mah Jongg, students will learn the basics of this fun and social game. We will discuss the rules and object of the game, learn tiles/symbols and cards of hands (40/50 different combinations), illustrate examples of winning hands and hands-on practice, and systematically break down the multi-layered components of the game into easily understood segments.

Ready to take your bridge game to the next level? This course is designed for players who know the basics and want to strengthen both their bidding and declarer play. We will cover important conventions that help partners communicate more effectively, including the Stayman convention, Jacoby transfers, overcalls, takeout doubles, Michaels cue bids, and the Unusual Notrump convention.

Alongside bidding, we will focus on key declarer play techniques such as finessing for two missing honors, understanding the nature of play in trump contracts, and learning how to count losers in trump contracts to plan the hand more effectively. Through discussion, examples, and practice hands, participants will gain confidence in competitive bidding and develop stronger strategies for declarer play. This class is ideal for players who are comfortable with the basics of bridge and are ready to deepen their understanding of both bidding conventions and card play.

Tarot is a tool for unlocking the subconscious mind, bringing thoughts and feelings into conscious awareness by identifying with the symbols in the cards. This class is designed for players who have a basic understanding of the game and are eager to enhance their skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Offering a blend of instruction and practice, participants can refine their strategies, learn advanced techniques, and receive real-time feedback from an experienced instructor. Students should have taken Beginner Canasta or have equivalent experience.

We will learn more defensive, strategic steps towards winning the game and/or playing against challenging players, as well as quicker decision-making in ways of choosing hands (which is the most challenging and difficult for most players) and betting options.
