Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) Workforce Development will offer a 40-hour Basic Electrical I training course that provides participants with hands-on experience with electrical power systems used in industry. The training includes an introduction to theory and application of AC/DC circuits, controls, transformers, and operation of power supplies. Participants will focus on installing industrial electrical systems, including print reading, wiring/box selection, component installation, control wiring, and wiring techniques.

The training will focus on industry-relevant skills and concepts, including:

The course is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their technical skills, advance their careers in manufacturing and industrial maintenance, or gain knowledge of automated control systems used across a variety of industries. Instruction will be provided by Ronald Baker and Terry Howard, who have a combined 100 years of experience in the technical electrical field.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) Workforce Development will offer an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) course in Covington, Tennessee, on Tuesday, October 27. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center, 3149 Highway 51 S. The course is designed to provide participants with essential lifesaving skills needed to respond confidently in emergency situations. Instruction will focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for infants, children, and adults, as well as the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

The course is appropriate for healthcare professionals and first responders seeking initial certification or recertification. This course equips participants with practical knowledge and hands-on skills that can help save lives. The course will be taught by Charles Jenkins, who earned an associate’s degree in health sciences at DSCC and a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health at Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, Alabama.

The Department of Workforce Development at Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) will host a full-day customer service workshop, “Mastering Customer Service: Communication, Connections, and Solutions,” on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the college's main campus in Dyersburg. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be led by Matthew Webb, who will share practical strategies for understanding and serving customers more effectively by focusing on the people behind each interaction.

Participants will learn how to recognize emotions such as frustration, confusion, and urgency and respond appropriately in a variety of customer situations. Webb will also examine the difference between customers' needs and wants, helping attendees identify what must be resolved while still creating a positive customer experience. In addition, Webb will explore effective approaches to handling customer concerns by staying calm, listening before responding, and focusing on solutions rather than arguments. Using the H.E.A.R.D. (Hear, Empathize, Apologize, Resolve, Delight) Model, participants will learn how to turn difficult situations into opportunities to build trust, strengthen relationships, and encourage long-term customer loyalty.

The workshop will also cover additional customer service essentials, including developing the right attitude to create positive customer interactions, going the extra mile to exceed customer expectations, and understanding the importance of teamwork in customer service to ensure a consistent experience across an organization. Participants will also explore best practices for phone customer service, including professional communication techniques and confident call handling, as well as strategies for learning from customer feedback to identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen customer relationships over time.

Webb serves as evangelist for the Main Street Church of Christ in Newbern, Tennessee. Before entering full-time ministry, he worked at Chick-fil-A, where he trained new employees and served in a leadership role. It was there that he developed a passion for customer service and caring for people.

The Dyersburg State Community College Department of Workforce Development will host a special leadership development workshop, “How to Get a Return on Failure,” on Thursday, November 5, from 8 a.m. to noon on the college’s main campus, 1510 Lake Road, in Dyersburg. Based on the leadership principles outlined in John C. Maxwell's book, the workshop is designed to help participants transform setbacks into opportunities for growth and success. The workshop is intended for aspiring leaders as well as experienced professionals currently serving in leadership roles.

Maxwell, a No. 1 New York Times bestselling author, coach, and speaker, is widely recognized as one of the nation’s foremost leadership authorities. Through this workshop, participants will learn practical strategies for developing resilience, leading through challenges, and fostering personal and organizational growth.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) Workforce Development will offer a non-credit Introduction to Microsoft Excel course on Thursday, November 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the college's main campus, 1510 Lake Road, in Dyersburg. Designed for beginners and individuals seeking to strengthen their spreadsheet skills, the workshop provides participants with a practical introduction to Microsoft Excel, one of the most widely used business software applications in today's workplace.

Participants will gain hands-on experience using Excel tools to build and manage simple spreadsheets, enter and organize data, and apply basic data analysis techniques to improve productivity and decision-making. Participants will leave with practical knowledge they can immediately apply in the workplace or at home. The course will be taught by Nathan LaFayette, an experienced instructor who will guide participants through the essential features and functions of Excel. LaFayette serves as the Institutional Research Analyst at DSCC.

It is quickly becoming an essential leadership tool for professionals across industries. Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) Workforce Development will host a complimentary AI workshop on Monday, November 16, for members and friends of the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce. The program, titled The AI-Enabled Leader: Practical Strategies to Increase Productivity, Improve Decision-Making, and Lead More Effectively, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber (Hatchie Room), 121 W. Main St., in Brownsville, Tennessee. Lunch will be provided by the Ford Community Center for the first 25 registrants.

Participants will learn how to leverage AI to boost productivity, sharpen strategic thinking, and streamline everyday leadership tasks. Designed specifically for busy professionals, the workshop will provide practical strategies and an action plan that attendees can implement immediately. The workshop is the second in a new series called Build Haywood Business, which equips small-business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and connections to thrive in Haywood County.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) now offers an online non-credit certificate course that teaches students the foundations of philanthropy in the United States and the fundamentals of professional fundraising. The Professional Fundraising Certificate course covers proven best practices to successfully raise money, along with practical advice and strategies for board governance, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, foundation relations, grant writing, and corporate relations.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) Workforce Development will host an entry-level safety program on October 20-29 that teaches workers how to identify, prevent, and avoid common job-related health and safety hazards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s 10-Hour General Industry training course will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the DSCC main campus, 1510 Lake Road, in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

OSHA 10 is available for entry-level workers in fields such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and health care. The course covers basic safety rules, employer responsibilities, and how to file a safety complaint. Upon completion, learners will receive an official OSHA 10 card from the U.S. Department of Labor and a certificate of completion from DSCC Workforce Development.

The course will be taught by Joe Crews, an authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer since 2012. He is a licensed attorney with expertise in employment law, workplace safety, and workers' compensation matters. With more than 25 years of manufacturing experience, he has maintained a strong focus on fostering safe and compliant work environments. Crews holds a Bachelor of Science in business management, a Master of Science in human resource management, and a Juris Doctor degree. His combination of legal expertise, human resources leadership, and operational experience provides a comprehensive perspective on workplace safety, compliance, and employee relations.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) Workforce Development will offer “Put AI to Work for You: Save Time, Work Smarter, Starting Monday,” a hands-on workshop designed to help professionals and business owners turn artificial intelligence from a curiosity into a practical workplace tool. The one-day workshop will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the DSCC Henry County Center at E.W. Grove, located at 900 Grove St., in Paris.

Rather than spending the day simply talking about AI, participants will work on lab computers and apply the technology to their own workplace needs with guidance from an experienced instructor. Activities will demonstrate how AI can assist with tasks such as writing emails and marketing copy, organizing meeting notes, drafting customer responses and working with spreadsheets. Participants also will learn a straightforward framework for writing effective prompts that produce useful results. During the workshop, they will begin building a personal library of reusable prompts tailored to their individual jobs and responsibilities. By the end of the day, participants will leave with a personal prompt library based on their own job tasks; a reusable AI toolkit developed during the workshop; a participant workbook featuring the CRAFT prompt framework, starter prompts organized by role and a responsible-use checklist; and a 30-day action plan for immediately incorporating AI into their work.

The workshop will be taught by Mark Jenkins, a certified WSI AI trainer and Paris native who leads the local WSI Digital Marketing agency. Founded in 1995 and operating in more than 80 countries, WSI is one of the world's largest digital marketing networks and helps businesses put artificial intelligence to practical use. Jenkins has more than 25 years of marketing experience, including leadership roles as a director, vice president and head of marketing, and teaches undergraduate and MBA marketing courses online.
