As the most enduring and popular novelist of his day, Charles Dickens and his writerly process have continued to fascinate scholars just as his classic tales of gentlemanly adventure, miserly retribution, transcontinental justice, and class relations have continued to delight readers worldwide. This discussion examines Dickens’ relationships with the publishing industry, taking three of his most famous novels, The Pickwick Papers, A Christmas Carol, and The Tale of Two Cities as points of entry. We will discuss the colorful range of persons who worked with Dickens and whose illustrations brought his creations to life. We will also explore some of the profoundly autobiographical elements of Dickens’ fiction, and the serialized publishing that made him a household name and profoundly impacted his craft.
