Short Steinbeck: The Long Valley

Z  Online Class:  A Zoom invitation link will be sent one day before each class session begins.

Text: The Long Valley, Viking Books, ISBN: 067043888X. Available at local bookstores and online.

If you associate John Steinbeck primarily with lengthy works like The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and East of Eden (1952), please join us in reading and discussing the shorter pieces he wrote before and after his first successful novel, Tortilla Flat (1935). Published in 1938, The Long Valley is a collection of Steinbeck’s short stories initially published in such popular periodicals as The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, and The Saturday Evening Post. All are set in his native Salinas Valley, California, and showcase the themes he would revisit in future writings.

Cecilia Donohue retired in 2013 following a 25-year career of undergraduate instruction, graduate teaching, and academic administration. She now resides in rural Tennessee with her husband Bill and their menagerie of horses, cat, and dog. Cecilia has written extensively on America’s southern authors and poets, notably Robert Penn Warren. She is currently an associate editor of The Steinbeck Review.
