Paper - it's all around us! However, handmade paper has a unique look and feel. Email correspondence works well in many situations, but sometimes only a handwritten note will do, especially if it’s handwritten on paper you have made! Making paper by hand yields results that are different, surprising, and one-of-a-kind. During these two sessions, class members will transform a vat of wet pulp into a set of note cards with coordinating lined envelopes. In the first class, we will pull sheets, maybe getting a little wet and messy. By the second session, the paper will be dry, and we will create unique stationery.

Karen Koykka O’Neal has been making handmade paper since 1987, after taking a class at the University of Michigan school of art. She has been teaching papermaking since 1994 and opened the Out of Hand Papermaking Studio in 2001. The studio offers instruction and workspace. Karen actively exhibits, provides demonstrations, and lectures on the 2000-year history of paper and the 4000-year history of papyrus, the ancient writing surface.
