Film: The Spirit of the Beehive

ONLINE: A Zoom invitation link will be sent one day before class begins.

This 1973 classic is set in a rural Castilian village not long after the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War. We experience this harsh place and time through the eyes of two children – seven-year-old Ana and her older sister, Isabel. Ana struggles to understand a strange movie she and Isabel have watched – Frankenstein. With its beautiful photography, deceptively simple story, and enigmatic title, The Spirit of the Beehive carefully veils its anti-Franco underpinnings. The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. John Stewart is a retired software developer with degrees in biology from the University of Michigan. He is not a movie maven, but he enjoys films with a foreign touch and believes this one will appeal to Elderwise cinema lovers.
