Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century as a symbol of his authority, the Tower of London has also been an infamous setting for stories of tragedy, murder and execution, especially during the Medieval and Tudor periods. The “guest list” is long including Henry VIII’s discarded wife, Anne Boleyn, the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, and the conspirator Guy Fawkes, to name but a few. There is also mystery surrounding the disappearance of two princes, a duke drowned in a barrel of wine, and a dead king in the chapel. These stories are now legendary – but can history help us determine the fact from the fiction?
