The Tower of London: Secrets of Centuries Past

ONLINE: A Zoom invitation link will be sent one day before class begins.

Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century as a symbol of his authority, the Tower of London has also been an infamous setting for stories of tragedy, murder and execution, especially during the Medieval and Tudor periods. The “guest list” is long including Henry VIII’s discarded wife, Anne Boleyn, the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, and the conspirator Guy Fawkes, to name but a few. There is also mystery surrounding the disappearance of two princes, a duke drowned in a barrel of wine, and a dead king in the chapel. These stories are now legendary – but can history help us determine the fact from the fiction? Pat Butler was the Elderwise Administrator until retiring back to the U.K. She currently volunteers as a Tour Guide for the National Trust’s Back-to-Back History Museum in Birmingham, U.K., and enjoys presenting social history classes to the U.K.’s University of the Third Age.
