Iconic Berlin: A Combination of Tragedy, Perseverance, and Cultural Glamour
Founded in 1217, Berlin evolved from the capital of a German Province, the Prussian Kingdom, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, to now the German Republic. In this class Gerlinda Melchiori will cover these different historical layers and highlight them with their key leaders (yes: Counts, Kings, Emperors, Dictators, and Prime Ministers) and their respective world views. She will cover the vast creation of art and architecture, literature and music, universities, and research institutes. The city’s museums especially document its cultural and artistic evolution. Indeed, Berlin displays the whole range from political disaster to intellectual and cultural glories. Gerlinda Melchiori holds advanced degrees in history and business, and a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Michigan. She has served as an international consultant to universities around the world.
