IN-PERSON: The Elderwise classroom at the Vineyard Church
Fritz Lang created 22 films during his five-decade career in Germany and the United States. We will view the two which brought him the most praise and the title "Master of Darkness." Metropolis (1927) was made in the silent era and offers a vision of a malfunctioning future in which the elite inhabit luxury skyscrapers and frolic in handsome gardens while the less fortunate live and slave deep underground. M (1931) is a masterpiece of the early sound era. Families in Berlin are terrorized by repeated murders of children, with the city's police unable to trace the killer. This movie brought stardom to Peter Lorre for his role as the elusive murderer. These German-language films have been beautifully restored with added music and English subtitles. John Stewart is a retired software developer with degrees in biology from the University of Michigan. He is not a movie maven, but he enjoys films with a foreign touch, and he believes these two will appeal to Elderwise cinema lovers.
