The 1930s New Deal: Then and Now

IN-PERSON: The Elderwise classroom at the Vineyard Church

Between 1933 and 1938, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal broke new ground by making the federal government a force for change and linking individuals to the nation in unprecedented ways. In this class Mike Homel will describe those policies of 80 years ago, and will explore similarities to and differences from today’s efforts by the Biden administration. We will also look at the economic and political context then and now, and compare today’s foreign challenges to those F.D.R. faced during the Great Depression. Michael Homel is Professor Emeritus of History at Eastern Michigan University. He specializes in 20th century American history and American urban history. He is the author of Unlocking City Hall: Exploring the History of Local Government and Politics, and other publications on urban politics and education.
