Immigration is a timely issue not only for Americans, but for the entire western world. In this class we will examine the difference between migration, emigration, and immigration, particularly but not exclusively relating to the United States. We will examine what causes people to leave all that is familiar and seek a better life elsewhere, as well as why so many people are hostile to the idea of newcomers, and what part governments play vis a vis human movement. Susan will address these issues during our first session. For the second session, we will watch and discuss the 2007 film The Visitor. The story begins when a man goes to New York to check on an apartment he owns, only to find illegal immigrants living there. How will this affect his life? Join Susan and find out. Susan Nenadic holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in history and English. She is known for her integration of history and literature in teaching, and is the author of several books and articles, including A Purse of Her Own: Occupations of 19th Century Women, and Legendary Locals of Ann Arbor. Susan currently leads Friends of Amoru, a non-profit organization building a secondary school in Uganda.
