From Tony and Grammy award-winners Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, co-written by Jessie Nelson, Alice by Heart is a musical inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. As they travel through the tale, Alice by Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This touching musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times.
Pam Cardell earned a B.S. degree in Comprehensive Communication and Theatre from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in 1993, and an M.A. degree in Theatre Arts from EMU in 1998. She is delighted to put her degrees to use as part of EMU's Department of Communication, Media, and Theatre Arts, where she has served as assistant managing director for EMU Theatre since 1996. She has been an actress, director, and producer, and has worked with several area theatres. She has also worked with students at Ann Arbor’s Huron High School and Chelsea High School and was the 2018 recipient of the Michigan Thespians "Standing Ovation Award" presented by the Michigan Educational Theatre Association.
