  • Tiny Twisted Trees: An Introduction to Bonsai

  • IN-PERSON: The Elderwise classroom at the Vineyard Church

Learn about the history and practice of the ancient art of bonsai, from its origin in China, introduction to Japan, and eventual spread around the world. Styles and aesthetics of bonsai will be discussed, along with the influence of different cultures as bonsai has been introduced into new places. Examples will be shown of how individual bonsai are styled and developed over time. Jay Sinclair is a retired public school science teacher who has been climbing the infinite learning curve of bonsai for more than 30 years. • IN-PERSON: The Elderwise classroom at the Vineyard Church

    Fee:  Member $10   Nonmember $15
Plus an additional $10 for materials

Join us to learn about vermicomposting or composting with worms, and how to create nutritional soil for our plants all year long. Learn about the different ways to compost, how the City of Ann Arbor handles composting, and where vermicomposting fits into this system. Mackenzie will answer our questions about how vermicomposting works, and how it can be beneficial for both indoor and outdoor plants and gardens. She will illustrate ways to set up a vermicomposting bin, discuss common issues that can arise, and teach us how to create a low maintenance food factory for our plants that we can then take home. Assistant Education Director Mackenzie Munro joined the Ecology Center team in 2015. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in environmental science and biology, and has 12 years of experience with other organizations, teaching environmental science and related topics to students and adults of all ages.

All children (and even some elephants!) love to paint. Children paint with abandon, not worrying if they are talented enough, or if they’re too busy, or if anyone else will think their work is worthy. Maybe you have always wanted to recapture the pleasure of being that free. This class is focused on the very basic ideas of: Where do I even begin? What kind of paper, what kind of brushes, what kind of paints? And, why watercolors? (It’s because the supplies are inexpensive enough for you to give it a try without a big investment.) And because when you see how watercolors behave as you move them across the paper, you’ll feel the magic of spontaneity you felt as a child. Of course, there are some rules to learn. We will learn a bit about mixing colors, and a bit about how to compose a picture. So, really, you don’t have to know anything, just come with the desire to play. You will go home with some 4x6 experiences on paper, and a completed greeting card (with envelope) that you can keep or send. Julie Garvey is a gallery and online represented artist who moved from Maine to Michigan several years ago. She has studied at the University of Georgia, graduating with a BFA from The College of William and Mary in Virginia, and has been painting since she could hold a brush!

  • Planning Your Organic Raised Bed Garden

  • ONLINE: A Zoom invitation link will be sent one day before class begins.

Sheila Carroll will teach us how to effectively plan and prepare a raised bed garden during the winter months. She will guide us through essential steps to ensure our garden is ready for planting when spring arrives. We will learn how to design a garden layout, choose the best heirloom and non-GMO seeds, and create a planting calendar that aligns with our local growing conditions. In addition to practical tips, Sheila will also delve into soil enrichment strategies, such as how to source and prepare organic compost and fertilizers during the winter months. This class emphasizes the importance of early planning to maximize yields and maintain a sustainable, chemical-free garden. (A follow-up class will be held in the Spring Term.) Sheila Carroll is an author and gardening enthusiast. She provides a simple, earth-wise approach to cultivating a beautiful garden and more sustainable living. Her book, Organic Raised Bed Gardening: Seven Easy Steps to a Sustainable, Low-Stress, and Chemical-Free Backyard Harvest of Vegetables, Herbs, and Flowers, is a top pick on Amazon for backyard and container gardening.
