A Mindful Approach to Self-Hypnosis: Accessing Your Inner Resources
Being intentional and mindful implies being aware of one’s own inner resources for learning, growing, healing, and effecting beneficial change. Research reveals that self-hypnosis, and other forms of inner quieting, induces many benefits. Self-hypnosis can be used for the purpose of reducing anxiety, increasing connectedness and empathy with self and others, freeing a person to extend forgiveness, valuing and using anger in a positive way, arousing feelings and cognitions of gratitude, improving memory and clarity of thinking, reducing pain, and providing an overall sense of well-being. In this class we will explore and experience this gentle and natural state of consciousness, a mindfulness of and appreciation for self.

Mary Pratt Miller, PhD, is a licensed professional counselor. She has been in private clinical practice since 1981, now in Northville, Michigan. She is an active member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, Michigan Mental Health Counselors Association, and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH).

FREE This class is being offered by the Michigan Alzheimer’s Association at no cost.
One in ten people over age 65 likely has some form of dementia, most often caused by a progressive brain disease such as Alzheimer’s. In the first part of this class, we will learn about the kinds of difficulties dementia causes with memory, planning, thinking, visual perceptions, judgment, and behavior, among other aspects of daily life. Learn how easy it is to be a dementia friend, helping your relatives and friends to live their daily lives in the community with less difficulty and more dignity. People with dementia may eventually need full time help at home or a facility at the very end of their journey, but for many years before then, they face various difficulties in their daily lives out in the community – shopping, banking, dining, going to events, going to church. Dementia friendly communities make a community-wide effort to show organizations how to interact with persons with dementia. The second part of this class will discuss the kinds of dementia-friendly practices businesses and organizations have adopted in dementia friendly cities nationwide.

Jim Mangi has been an Alzheimer’s Association Community Educator since 2019, and has presented education programs to personal caregivers, businesses, cultural institutions, and students. He is the head of Dementia-Friendly Saline, which aims to make Saline, Michigan, a community that respects and welcomes people with dementia. Jim established a Memory Café in his community, which allows those affected by dementia to connect. In addition, Jim provides care for his wife, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Join us for a step-by-step workout guide on how to move more in your kitchen. Your kitchen gadgets are the only equipment you will need for this low-impact workout. Moving more every day matters, and since we spend a lot of time in our kitchens waiting for things to warm up, boil, brew, or stew, it is a perfect time to engage in more physical movement. Natural moves such as squats and kitchen-sink planks and push-ups, along with Pilates exercises, are the key focus in the effective kitchen workout. Props Needed: kitchen towel, massage or tennis ball, two unopened soup cans.
Gwyn Jones has offered personal training sessions, workshops and classes on Pilates for more than ten years. She is certified in STOTT Pilates and TRX suspension, and annually enrolls in continuing Pilates Education.

There are many reasons why we should pay attention to what we eat. Good nutrition is very important for our health, and maintaining a fine balance of nutrients is what helps us stay healthy. The processed foods many of us frequently and repeatedly consume may be convenient and tasty, but they can, and often do, compromise our health. Do you want to learn more about how good nutrition can make a big difference in your health? Are you interested in knowing about the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and whether fish oil supplements really help lower your cholesterol? Are there any health benefits in consuming garlic and ginger? Join us for this class to learn more about how food acts as medicine – not only to maintain health and wellbeing, but to prevent and treat disease.

Cecilia Sauter holds an M.S. degree from Texas Woman’s University and is a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Diabetes Educator. She currently works at the University of Michigan, training clinical staff in how to help people who have chronic conditions.

In this class you will learn about three critical steps to prevent identity theft. Most people never take the time to learn how criminals lure their victims into financial scams, which leads to billions of dollars lost every year. And to make matters worse, most victims never recover their money. Our goal is to help fix this problem and to prepare you to stop scams from robbing you in the first place. After this class, you will find peace in knowing some of the best practices that local residents are already using to prevent crime.

A member of the Ann Arbor Police Department will present this training. The Ann Arbor Police Department has over 100 sworn police officers and detectives who specialize in crime response and prevention. The department serves a diverse and growing population of 121,000 people, which often swells to 200,000 during the workday. Officers are experienced in reporting, investigating, and preventing identity theft crimes and will share this information with you.
