  • Animating Art with Microbits

    We will spend the first day creating unique artwork, then we will animate the art using robotics skills to bring it to life. Using Microsoft Microbits and Hummingbird robotics kits, we will use coding and circuitry to make parts of our artwork swing, rock, light up, or spin. Students will learn to use LEDs, servos, and sensors in their 3-D artwork. Students will create a video to remember this experience.

  • Contemporary Glass Marble Making - Lampworking

    We will use glass rods and shape them in the flame of a torch to create unique glass marbles with unique designs of swirls, stripes, pinwheels and reverse twists. After the design is applied to the glass students will use graphite molds to shape the glass into a sphere creating a round marble. These are ancient techniques that have been used for many centuries. The marbles created in this class won't look like the mass produced marbles used in games today. These collectors marbles are one of a kind, each one being unique and something to pass down to future generations. These unique marbles are also fun to give away as gifts.

    This class is open to all skill levels, although some lampworking experience is recommended.

    Elko in-person class for ages 14 and up.

    Participants will receive guidance to create projects they choose from the following options: Full Dress, Corset Belt, Tunic, Hooded Cape or Money Pouch. Students will provide their own fabric; instructor will provide a list of materials with the quantity of fabric needed for each project in advance. Bring a personal sewing machine or contact instructor for a machine to be provided. All skill levels welcome! Enrolled students will receive FREE entry in The Robin Hood Renaissance Faire costume contest.

    Create your own functional drinking horn using a real bull horn! Students will be able to adorn their custom drinking horn with a leather belt holder so they can wear or display their finished product. (All bull horns will be sealed food safe epoxy).

    Students will develop the ability to express their ideas through writing and visual representation while creating a technical flat for their tech pack. They will explore innovative approaches while also drawing inspiration from notable examples in the Fashion Illustration book by Nine Heads. Emphasis will be placed on effective communication with manufacturers, ensuring students become proficient in the necessary terminology to articulate their needs. Furthermore, they will gain a comprehensive understanding of fast fashion, sustainable practices, and timeless design principles. By the end of the course, students will be inspired to delve deeper into the fashion industry.

    In this class students will learn to create fun and whimsical bird beads using lampworking techniques. Lampworking is an age old process of heating and manipulating glass rods using the flame of a bench torch. Using these glass rods, tweezers, graphite paddles and many other tools, students will create hummingbirds, swans, flamingos and penguin beads. We will also learn to use frit or crushed glass to create cute little frit birds that can be used in jewelry making. Come learn with us as we watch these little birds fly free from the glass.

  • Jewelry Fabrication Techniques: Peekaboo Pearl Earrings

    Join instructor Mica Johnson in making peekaboo pearl earrings. Learn how to pattern metal with a rolling mill and hammer, cut out your desired shape with a jewelers saw, learn how to wire wrap and dangle a pearl or bead in the negative space in the metal. You will learn how to make your own ear-wires in a couple of different styles. The class fee will allow you to make at least 2 pairs of earrings. More materials will be available for purchase during the class.

    The first day we will discuss quickly how best to approach outdoor work. Afterward the instructor will do a longer demonstration painting and discuss the issues of creating a painting from nature, mixing colors, composition, brush choices, and and how to select a view most likely to lend itself to a successful painting.

    Upon registration, you will be provided with a suggested materials list.

    Participants will learn how to use EVA foam to create a lightweight a piece of amor and a weapon that can be used for medieval and cosplay costumes. Each student will be provided with enough EVA Foam to create 2 items: 1 average size sword or weapon and 1 chest plate or shoulder armor. Enrolled students will receive FREE entry in the The Robin Hood Renaissance Faire costume contest.
