(10 contact hours) This course offers techniques and insights based on recent scientific studies about fostering health, happiness and well-being to support a healthy brain.

The brain is an amazing organ. It receives information through the five senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing and, in connection with an individual's lifestyle, can have a powerful impact on the health of the body and mind. The brain is affected by virtually every aspect of a person's life including how happy they are, the type of music they listen to, their meditation practices, the quality of their sleep, the type and amount of play in their lives, their levels of stress, the foods they choose to eat, the amount and type of physical activity in which they engage, whether or not they abuse drugs, and whether or not they regularly spend time in nature.

The outcome of this certificate is for the learner to describe the basic structures and functions of the brain and explain how happiness, music, meditation, sleep, play, and lifestyle factors (such as stress, nutrition, physical activity, substance abuse, and nature) affect brain health.

The Amazing Brain: Understanding The Basics

The brain is an amazing organ. Weighing approximately three pounds, and containing approximately 100 billion neurons, the brain controls all necessary functions of the body, receives and interprets information from the outside world, and embodies the essence of the mind. Intelligence, emotion, and memories are just a few of the processes governed by the brain.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the components of the nervous system; describe the structures and functions of the brain; explain the functions of the two hemispheres of the brain; explain the role of neuron connections, synapses, and neurotransmitters; describe the effect of normal aging on the brain; describe the role of brain imaging and gene studies in the identification of neurological disorders; examine the effects of genes and the environment; and differentiate between current theories of neuroplasticity, neurogenesis, and epigenetics.

    Wire Your Brain for Happiness

The hidden power of everyday positive experiences can change your brain and change your life. Everyone wants to be happy and healthy. By focusing on becoming happier and creating positive experiences, research suggests that you will experience increased energy, improved immune function, increased creativity, improved relationships, and increased productivity—happiness results in a healthier brain, a more vibrant body, and a longer life.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe how happy, positive experiences, and emotions affect the brain. The relationship between happiness and neuroplasticity, determinants of happiness, happiness assessment tools, and practices to increase happiness will be examined.

Music, Sound, and the Healthy Brain

Whether you are listening to rock music in your car or listening to Mozart at home, music has an effect on your brain. Engaging in musical activity (listening and creating) involves almost every region of your brain. Music affects the brain, the mind, the thought process, and the spirit.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the elements of and principles of sound; how music engages the whole brain; the brain-based benefits of music; the physiological and psychological effects of music; the effect of music on mental health and stress reduction, therapeutic uses and benefits, music and the healthy aging brain; and the future of music and brain health.

    Meditation and Brain Health

Meditation is a mind-body practice with many methods and variations that are all based on the silence and stillness of present-moment awareness. Exciting research is showing that a regular practice of meditation causes physical changes in the brain that can be beneficial to mental and physical health. Meditation can also change the way the brain functions.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to examine current neuroscience research and the effects of meditation on brain waves, identify meditation techniques to enhance brain health, and explore the psychological and physiological effects of meditation.

Sleep And The Brain: What's The Connection

Do you wake up in the morning feeling sleepy? Do you feel sleepy during the day? A good night's sleep is as essential for your brain and your body as food and water. Sleep deprivation affects the brain in multiple ways, impairing judgment, affecting cognition, and slowing reaction times. Sleep quality affects your mental and physical health in ways science is just beginning to understand.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the effects of sleep on brain health, the role of sleep in health, the impact of sleep deprivation on health; the stages of sleep; and conventional and integrative therapies for improving sleep.

Play And The Brain: Why Play Matters To Your Gray Matter

"Act like a child" is probably not a phrase that is on the top of anyone's mind. Yet, researchers are discovering that there are many health benefits to rediscovering your inner child. Play is vital to the health of human beings, and it is an essential component of a healthy life. Play is present in all mammals, including human beings. In human beings, it is equally important for children as it is for adults. While childishness is not desirable, being "childlike" is.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to discuss the impact that play has on the brain and overall well-being; the importance of play in human development; the qualities and characteristics of play; the types of play and play personalities; the health benefits of play; and the ways to incorporate play into everyday life.

Healthy Lifestyles: How Stress, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Substance Abuse, And Nature Affect Brain Health

Individuals' lifestyles can have a powerful impact on the health of their body and mind. The brain is affected by virtually every aspect of their life. Including their levels of stress, the foods they choose to eat, the amount and type of physical activity in which they engage, whether or not they abuse drugs, and whether or not they regularly spend time in nature.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to discuss the effects of brain health on specific lifestyle factors, including stress, nutrition, physical activity, substance abuse, and nature.

Spirituality, religion, and culture play important roles in health and healing. To provide the most compassionate and culturally appropriate care, healthcare systems and healthcare professionals need to recognize and understand a variety of spiritual and religious values, beliefs, and practices and their impact on health and healing. This certificate program examines the characteristics of spirituality; spiritual assessment and spiritual care; sacred, healing spaces; spiritual rituals; spiritual care of children, aging individuals, those who are dying; spiritual aspects of grieving, health, and religion; and therapeutic interventions for healing. As healthcare evolves, the spiritual aspects of human healing will be increasingly included in care.

    Characteristics of Spirituality

While theorists and researchers have yet to agree on a single, universally accepted theory or definition of spirituality, few would deny its existence or impact on health and healing. In the past, spirituality was synonymous with religion. Although spirituality may include traditional religious beliefs and practices, spirituality is a much broader concept that also includes nonreligious beliefs and expressions. It includes a sense of connection to something larger than ourselves and typically involves a search for meaning in life. For many cultures, spirituality is deeply connected to healing practices and expanded stages of consciousness.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the characteristics of spirituality, theories of spirituality, the stages of spiritual development, and the connection between spirituality and healing.

Spirituality, the Health Care Professional, and the Spiritual Care Provider

The relationship between healthcare provider and client can provide both with a sense of strength, healing, inner peace, and an interconnectedness that gives meaning to the relationship. This relationship is a deeply spiritual one and results from the sharing of intimate experiences such as birth, death, life-threatening illnesses, emotional chaos, and the issues that arise during healing. By caring, listening, and engendering trust, the healthcare or spiritual care provider and their client can form a spiritual relationship that can heal each other.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the types of spiritual care provided by generalists and specialists, their diverse roles in providing spiritual care, and the moral and ethical issues to consider when providing this care. The influence of a healthcare provider's spirituality on their ability to provide spiritual care, as well as the barriers to providing spiritual care to clients, will also be discussed.

    Spiritual Rituals

The spiritual rituals of prayer, meditation, guided imagery, gratitude, spending time in nature, dancing, storytelling, and art can all help people connect to their inner being, to others, and to a divine spirit or Sacred Source. A part of spiritual and cultural traditions, rituals help to provide awareness, meaning, intention, and purpose in life.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe spiritually healing rituals that can be incorporated in the care of clients and for themself.

    Spirituality, Religion and Health

Healthcare professionals and spiritual care providers face many challenges in becoming prepared to administer holistic, respectful, and culturally and spiritually competent care for their patients and clients. Understanding the relationship between spirituality, culture, and health is a vital part of providing spiritually competent care.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the relationship between spirituality, culture, and health. The health belief systems and major healthcare systems as well as spiritual, cultural, and healthcare practices of African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Arab Americans are explored.

    Spirituality, Culture and Health

Healthcare professionals and spiritual care providers face many challenges in becoming prepared to administer holistic, respectful, and culturally and spiritually competent care for their patients and clients. Understanding the relationship between spirituality, culture, and health is a vital part of providing spiritually competent care.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the relationship between spirituality, culture, and health. The health belief systems and major healthcare systems as well as spiritual, cultural, and healthcare practices of African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Arab Americans are explored.

    Spiritual Assessment and Spiritual Care

Spiritual care is an important and necessary part of appropriate patient care, yet many healthcare professionals feel ill equipped to provide it to their clients. When people experience a spiritual crisis and need spiritual care, they may choose to discuss their concerns only if they have been shown respect, understanding, and appreciation by the person(s) caring for them. Thus, understanding spirituality and its impact on well-being is one way to demonstrate respect and appreciation and helps healthcare practitioners provide compassionate and appropriate spiritual care.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the elements of spiritual care and a spiritual assessment, state the importance of providing this aspect of care, and identify strategies that can ensure a successful spiritual assessment. Several spiritual assessment models are discussed, and the various types of alterations in spiritual integrity are explained. Finally, considerations for the appropriate planning, implementation, and evaluation of spiritual care are examined.

    Therapeutic Interventions for Healing

The therapeutic interventions of music, art, dance, humor, and animal-assisted therapy can be integrated into mainstream medicine and should be considered as complements to, not replacements for, mainstream medical treatments. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is evaluating these therapeutic interventions and research is demonstrating that they are not only safe but effective as well.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe an overview of mind-body-spirit healing interventions and to discuss their therapeutic uses and benefits.

    Sacred Spaces, Healing Places

Modern nursing was founded on the concepts of healing environments. Florence Nightingale was one of the first to realize the importance of nature, light, noise, and sensory stimulation in healing. Today, it is well known that healing environments empower patients to be involved in their own healing journey and take responsibility for their own health. Through their understanding of the elements of a sacred, healing space and the environment's role in healing, healthcare providers and consumers can create and support these spiritual spaces so their health is enhanced, their culture and history are respected, and wellness, prevention, and self-care are emphasized.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the importance of color, nature, light, air quality, temperature, smells, music, noise, furnishings, and wayfinding in creating a healing environment for clients and healthcare providers. In addition, the learner will describe the role of the healthcare provider in creating a spiritually healing environment.

    Spiritual Care of the Dying

The dying experience is unique for each individual. For many individuals, death is not an end to life. It is simply a passage to another dimension, sometimes called heaven, the spiritual world, another plane of existence, or nirvana. As knowledge of issues involved in death and dying increases and positive attitudes about death and dying are promoted, the spiritual care and support for people who are dying continues to improve. In addition, there are many spiritual, psychological, social, and cultural healing strategies that can assist healthcare providers in the compassionate spiritual care of the dying.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe healing strategies that can assist healthcare providers in the spiritual care of the dying. Spiritual, psychological, social, and cultural aspects of dying will be explored.

    Spirituality and the Grieving Process

Dealing with loss and grief is one of the great spiritual challenges of life. Individuals experience grief differently, depending on their inner resources, support, and relationships. Grief is subjective and can have psychological, social, and spiritual responses. Although cultural expressions of grief may vary, the deep sense of loss and sorrow is almost universal.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the grieving process and explore the types of grief reactions, which include acute, chronic, anticipatory, disenfranchised, and dysfunctional grief. The goals of grief counseling and the elements of healing will also be described.

    Spirituality, Religion, and Children

Spirituality is a dynamic, evolving process that begins in infancy and continues throughout life. Spiritual development in children is especially important because of its impact on the rest of the child's life.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe spiritual and religious development in children and how it impacts their health. The relationship between the phases of psychosocial development and spiritual development in children of all ages are explored. Characteristics of spiritual distress in children, methods of providing spiritual care to children, and specific care concerns for children with a chronic or terminal illness are also presented.

    Spiritual Dimensions of Aging

Aging presents unique challenges to an individual's spiritual growth, development, and expression. The relationships between loss, hope, love, sexuality, religion, and health can profoundly affect spirituality in the older adult. In addition, spirituality and religion help the aging adult cope with personal difficulties, stress, surgery, and chronic diseases. Finally, the development of spirituality in the aging adult incorporates the cultural wisdom and spiritual wisdom of elders.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe the process of spiritual development in the aging individual.

    Introduction to Physical Therapy

In this lesson, you'll be introduced to the profession of physical therapy (PT). You'll learn about the history of PT and how two wars and an epidemic created a need for this profession. To help you understand what makes PTs different from other health care professionals, this course will discuss the types of patients who need PT and the types of treatment PTs use. You'll understand the important difference between PTs, PT assistants, and PT aides as you come to understand the special role of PT aides.

Communication for the Physical Therapy Aide

As a PT aide, you'll communicate with many different people, so this lesson will focus on the communication skills you'll need to help you communicate with your supervising PT, patients, and their families. You'll learn about some of the challenges you'll face when communicating with sick or injured people, and how to demonstrate the traits of empathy, respect, and patience. You'll also spend some time on SOAP notes—the method many medical personnel use to document their evaluations and patient treatments.

Ethics and Law for the PT Aide

This very important lesson will help you stay out of trouble by discussing the law and ethics for the PT aide. You'll learn the differences between law and ethics and why you must be concerned about both. You'll go over the American Physical Therapy Association's Code of Ethics, relating its principles to PT aides. You'll also learn about the American Hospital Association's A Patient's Bill of Rights so you'll know how you should treat patients in different situations. You'll want to understand both negligence and malpractice, so this lesson covers those topics, too. Finally, you'll spend some time on the very important topic of patient confidentiality. You can face stiff penalties if you violate patient confidentiality, so you need to have a thorough understanding of this topic.

    The Language of Physical Therapy

Have you ever noticed that every profession has its own unique language? The health care profession is no different. As a PT aide, it's vitally important that you understand the language that PTs use, which is the focus of this lesson. You'll cover planes of the body and directional terms. You'll also learn the terms that define the body's major regions and body cavities. The movements of joints have special names; this lesson will define them and include lots of graphics that demonstrate these movements. You'll finish up by learning some other terms related to function and movement in the last chapter.

    Anatomy and Physiology: Part 1

In this lesson, you'll begin learning about the body's organ systems. You'll go over how your body is organized, from atoms to an entire individual. You'll learn about the muscular, skeletal, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. You'll also learn about the organs in each of these systems, the jobs they perform, and disorders affecting these systems that are commonly treated by PTs.

    Anatomy and Physiology: Part 2

In this lesson, you'll continue learning about the organ systems. To start out, you'll see how human organ systems are interrelated and how a problem with one system will affect the others. You'll then move on to a discussion of the integumentary (skin), digestive, urinary, respiratory, and reproductive systems. You'll learn about each system's organs, function, and some common disorders. You'll finish the lesson with a discussion of the most important concept in human physiology—homeostasis. Homeostasis means the drive of your body to keep many different variables, like blood pressure and temperature, within a certain range. You'll find out why this is so crucial and how you might be asked to monitor homeostasis while caring for patients.

Safety for the Physical Therapy Aide: Part 1

You'll start learning about specific safety issues in this lesson, focusing on infection control. Anyone working in healthcare must understand the meaning of infection, its causes, and how it spreads. To help you understand this, this lesson discusses the chain of infection and what you can do to break that chain so that the infection doesn't spread from one person to another. You'll spend some time on an infection called MRSA because it's so common and dangerous. Since proper hand hygiene is the most effective way to stop infection from spreading, you'll go over the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines. You'll also learn about patient-care equipment, environmental control, and the role of vaccinations.

Safety for the Physical Therapy Aide: Part 2

You'll explore important safety issues again in this lesson, but this time, instead of infection, you'll focus on proper body mechanics and safe patient transfers. Body mechanics means the posture of your body and how you move it. You must understand proper body mechanics to protect yourself from injury. The lesson starts out with a discussion of the anatomy of the spine since the spine gets hurt most often when you ignore proper body mechanics. It talks about proper posture and the importance of paying attention to your center of gravity. It also goes over a list of principles for using proper body mechanics and guidelines for moving patients in a variety of different situations. You'll also learn about lifting machines, which PTs now commonly use to transfer patients.

    Helping Patients Walk

Most people take walking for granted, but many patients must learn to walk again after an illness or injury. PTs often ask their aides to help with this, so you must understand what types of conditions make it hard for people to walk. You should also understand the normal gait cycle, so this lesson will spend some time on that topic and tell you about common deviations from normal gait. You'll also learn about different ambulatory devices, including parallel bars, walkers, crutches, and canes and how they're used in PT.

    Using Physical Agents

PTs use physical agents, rather than medications or surgery, to treat patients. These agents include heat, cold, ultrasound, traction, and electricity. To explain these agents, you'll start by learning about the relationship between a disease or injury and one's ability to perform activities of daily living. You'll then follow a fictitious Mrs. Smith as she struggles to recover from a car accident. You'll learn about the physical agents her PT chooses and how they affect her body. You'll end by learning about contraindications (when an agent should never be used) and precautions (when an agent must be used with extra care).

    Use of Exercise: Part 1

Along with physical agents, PTs use exercise to treat patients. In this lesson, you'll learn about three types of exercise—strength training, aerobic exercise, and range-of-motion exercise. You'll learn how muscles are put together and why resistance is necessary to build strength. This lesson will teach you about three important principles you should know when supervising a strength training program. You'll also go over aerobic exercise and learn how it increases a person's ability to use oxygen. Finally, you'll learn about range-of-motion exercises. You'll find out how PTs measure how far a patient can move a joint and why joints sometimes become limited in their motion. You'll learn about different types of range-of-motion exercises and important principles to follow.

    Use of Exercise: Part 2

In the final lesson, you'll explore balance, coordination, and developmental delays. This lesson focuses on children, but the information will be helpful if you're treating adults, too. You'll learn about a special sensory system called the vestibular system and how important it is for maintaining balance. You'll view examples of activities PTs use to treat children with balance problems, and learn about the adaptive response—something PTs continually look for when treating children. The lesson will move on to a discussion of developmental coordination disorder, and you'll learn how important it is for professionals to properly diagnose this condition. Moving onto the subject of developmental delays, you'll learn about developmental milestones and how PTs treat children who fail to meet those milestones. You'll also see how PTs use developmental activities with adults who have sustained traumatic brain injuries.
