The Japanese Internment - Part 1

Part 1 analyzes west coast state and federal political legislation and economic policies dating to the 19th century that culminated in the incarceration of Japanese residents and Japanese-Americans in 1942, approximately two-thirds of whom were U.S. citizens. This “military necessity” falsely premised on the assumption that ethnicity dictates national loyalty will be examined using original source material and photographs. An optional field trip to view Uprooted - An American Story at the California Museum,  May 2024, will complement the class. See the Field Trip section for registration details.
