From Gladys Knight to the Isley Brothers to Bill Withers, for many music lovers, the Golden Age of R&B and Soul was the 1970s. Motown moved to LA and gave us incredible music from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Commodores, and the Jackson Five. Soul Train debuted in 1971 and became one of television’s greatest showcases for music. The 70s have been called the Decade of Funk, and no band was funkier and more popular than Earth, Wind, and Fire. In mid-decade a new kind of R&B emerged - “the Sound of Philadelphia,” highlighted by the O’Jays, the Spinners, and Stylistics. In this class, you’ll hear great music, watch video interviews with 70s R&B legends and learn their compelling personal stories. (Term 1 Class)
