Around 10,000 BCE, a human carved a distinctive design onto a bone. This is the oldest known swastika, and for centuries it was held in esteemed symbolism by the ancient Druids, Celts, Teutonic Knights and Nordic tribes. The swastika (from Sanskrit, meaning well-being) has been a symbol of peace and joy thousands of years. Prior to 1920, the swastika was a popular design in the west; many native American tribes had the swastika woven in their blankets, baskets, and painted on pottery. This class will explore the fantastical journey taken by this organic design and its ignoble end in Germany. (Term 1 Class)
