Around 12,000 years ago, a human carved the oldest known swastika onto a mammoth bone. This symbol, meaning "well-being" in Sanskrit, has represented peace and joy in India for millennia. Various cultures, including ancient Druids, Celts, and Nordic tribes, also used it. Before 1920, the swastika appeared on greeting cards, soft drinks, buildings, and sports uniforms in the West, and it was woven into Native American artifacts. This class will explore the swastika's rich history and its tragic appropriation in Germany.
