Birth, marriage, and death data form the building blocks of your family tree. Government records for these events are called vital records, containing the names, dates, places, and (usually) relationships that uniquely identify a person. Vital records are called “Primary Sources” because they are created at the time of an event by a reliable witness, and the information on them is usually correct. Learn when states started requiring these records, where you can find them, substitutes for when you can’t find them, and more. Includes handout.
