3 days; 2 nights— Depart via a Sierra College bus to Ashland, Oregon home of the Tony Award winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The group will stay at the Stratford Inn which is located a few blocks from the theaters. In route, we will visit the Ide Adobe State Park and the Sisson Fish Hatchery for a bag lunch. We will dine together at a local restaurant in Ashland before seeing our first play, the classic, Three Musketeers, at the outdoor Elizabethan Theatre. Day two has you exploring the adorable town of Ashland in the morning. The afternoon is with us seeing Shakespeare’s famous romance/tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, in the Bowmar Theatre. Dinner is on your own and that night’s performance is the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play, “Rent”- about a group of young artists who fight for justice and visibility during the AIDS crisis. Breakfast is included on all three days. This is a theatrical experience on par with Broadway. A pre-trip zoom will discuss the 3 plays. You are responsible for two lunches and one dinner. WE'RE SORRY! THIS COURSE HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.Join Liz and Terry McAteer at their home in Grass Valley for a fabulous celestial event. Top local amateur astronomer George Robinson will bring his high powered telescopes to view galaxies, planets and constellations. The McAteer's will supply a dark sky, hot mulled wine, and cheese platter. We will have indoor instructions with George followed by viewing of over a dozen celestial objects. Dress warm, and bring a flashlight. Weather permitting. This OLLI event is open to only 15 participants so you can have a meaningful hands-on experience. $50 per/person.

Take a trip back in time to the late 1800s to early 1900s at the Empire Mine in Grass Valley. The Empire Mine is one of the largest, richest, and longest-operating (1850-1956) gold mines in California. It produced more than eight billion dollars in gold by today's standards. We will take private tours of the Estate Tour which includes the Bourn Cottage and Mineyard. The price includes bus transportation, tour, and a pasty lunch. We will eat our authentic pasty lunch at picnic tables after the tour. Sierra College bus will be provided from the Rocklin Campus and will meet at the Dietrich Theater leaving promptly at 9:00 AM. Members from the Grass Valley area please meet us there. Wear comfortable closed toe shoes for walking (gravel walking area) and bring a water bottle.

This three session class begins by discussing the history of the American penal system with particular attention to Governor Brown’s AB 111 prison reform legislation. The second class will find us on an in-depth tour of the Wayne Brown Correctional Jail in Nevada City, where you will visit the cell pods, chat with jailers and visit the booking room. Yes, inside a working jail! (Many thanks to Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon for arranging this unforgettable experience). The third class will have us debriefing the tour and discussing the future of incarceration. Limited to 20 participants.
4/20: Students will provide their own transportation to the jail tour.

The Grass Valley Museum depicts the rich history from the Gold Rush days to 1930 with displays of furniture, art, objects d’art, clothing, musical instruments and artifacts of the Victorian era. The Museum also features large Old California Style paintings, a Victorian bedroom, a lace making exhibit, Lola Montez’s bathtub, a hall of photographs from the turn of the century, a table used for the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945 and Dr. Jones’ office. Today you can almost hear the echoes of children reciting their lessons as you stand behind the teacher’s desk in the restored classroom. On the desk is an attendance book from 1890. These tours are limited to six people. There are ten steps to the second floor where the Museum is located. Tours estimated to last 90 minutes.
Note: Participants must provide their own transportation to and form the Museum.
