The symbol often relates to myth and cosmology, emphasizing strong ties to mother earth and a living landscape connecting earth to the heavens. This class offers a step-by-step process to show how to find ancestors in historical newspapers and books. Several large sites provide data for newspapers or books, but it is often challenging to find the specific data you need. This class shows how to use the "finding sites" so you can readily zero in on the data you need. 

The genealogy online capabilities have grown so much in recent years that it is important to be able to take advantage of all the new features: to help us find our most challenging ancestors and to be sure we are making good use of our time. The emphasis in this class is on the many good genealogy features of the major sites as well as the latest DNA features.

Data for property, wills, taxes, and other "follow the money" records are valuable in finding family data and determining family relationships. The 'money data" often can be found at much earlier dates than vital records or other genealogy data. Property data can be found in all countries and in all time periods, dating back centuries. Emphasis in this class is often finding this data online.

Drawing from a variety of time-tested disciplines, this class offers effective, results-producing movements designed specifically for the OLLI student at whatever your level is. These exercises will add strength and elasticity to your muscles and frame while protecting and strengthening your back. Happiness is a Choice………in later years. Most of us want to live a long, happy and healthy life with our remaining years, not one that is merely without disease. Happiness and Well Being is important as we age and can affect our physical, mental and emotional well-being.  Abraham Lincoln said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” He was right. We do have choices and there is a lot we can do to experience improved well-being and live out our life at an optimal level. Happiness is a Choice is an introductory series of four educational and experiential 1 1/2 hour sessions that is designed to help improve well-being and optimize everyday life of aging adults. It utilizes educational content, small groups and exercises to provide understanding and choices for daily living. 

This class shows how to avoid the 6 major genealogy mistakes: trusting the "old-time" data; trusting family genealogists and family stories; connecting the wrong "same name" people; failing the reasonableness test; trusting the professional genealogists; and trusting all "original" data. Numerous examples are presented.

Tom Hanks stars in three films that recount pivotal moments in history. "Bridge of Spies" relates the story of the lawyer who negotiates the release of a convicted CIA pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. Then Hanks joins Meryl Streep in "The Post," the story of the Washingon Post's attempts to publish the infamous Pentagon Papers. Finally, he is featured in "Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close," the story of a young boy coping with the loss of his father following the 9/11 attack on New York.

On the 50th anniversary of the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon, perhaps it is time to admit that much of the nation was mistaken. As discovered in Part One, the Nixon Administration was spied upon by the Pentagon, infiltrated by CIA, and deeply disserved by its White House counsel John Dean III. Following the June 17, 1972 arrest of CIA assets for the break-in at the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office building, President Nixon made the disastrous decision to cover up the collusion of the Committee to Re-Elect the President. That action began a two years-long odyssey that ended with his resignation. What was little known, but will be explored in this course, is how the President’s enemies conspired to remove him from office in a silent coup d’etat. Abusing the media, the judicial process, and the Bill of Rights, Nixon’s foes achieved through a scandal what they could not at the ballot box. Following the scholarship of Len Colodny, Robert Gettlin, Jim Hougan, Geoff Shepard, Ken Holland, and other researchers, we will discover what actually happened from August 1972 through August 1974.

Monthly gathering to discuss books ranging from historical fiction to non-fiction and classics. Short presentation by a member of the group focusing on facts about the author, historical setting or other interesting aspects of the book sets tone for discussion. Experience orchestral works from within by playing them with the OLLI Orchestra, an ensemble of music-loving amateurs. Our weekly rehearsals emphasize music appreciation and an atmosphere of mutual support. Making music builds community. We will present a concert for the public at the end of the semester. We will celebrate this engineering feat first hand by taking Amtrak from historic Colfax to Reno. Our late afternoon and evening will be in Reno (staying at the El Dorado Hotel-- a block from the train station). You are free to see a show, play the slots or stroll the Truckee River Walk. Following breakfast on day two, we will take a 45 minute reserved coach trip to experience the Comstock Lode (Silver Rush of the 1860's) in Virginia City then continue back to Colfax--arriving by 5 pm. The cost is $225 p/p double occupancy ($300 single occupancy) which includes transportation, hotel room, box lunch and breakfast. You are responsible for your dinner in Reno and lunch in Virginia City. Limited to 53 participants.

T’ai Chi, or the Form, is a physical exercise that promotes good health, relaxation and peace of mind. It has the advantages of regular exercise combined with a slowness of pace that western society so conspicuously lacks. The relaxed gentle movements of the T’ai Chi forms keep the body from being tense and awkward. Joseph Guida studied with and was trained by world renowned T’ai Chi Master Da Liu in the 1980’s. In the first class we will learn how to stand erect, balance on one foot and the opening movement. The second class will review the first class and move on to the second movement of the form.

The militia was a long-standing English institution transplanted to Britain's North American Colonies. Colonists were obligated to serve as soldiers in local conflicts. During the revolution, colonists took control of the militia system. Organized militias became a function of the federal and state governments. In the election of 1860 there was a mass militia movement to elect Lincoln as president and end slavery. Since 1990 there have been a growing number of unorganized militias including many groups that are anti-government.

Terry McAteer will lead these weekly political science informative sessions to get you behind the scenes of one of the most important elections in American history. Polling analysis, financial reports, ad campaigns and campaign strategies will take place weekly in order to provide you the most comprehensive coverage of the Presidential election along with Senate, House, state and local coverage.

We will be provided with a walking tour of the town, dine at a local historic eatery and visit a nearby small winery for a private tasting. Lunch and wine tasting included. The Pops Chorale, led by Artistic/Musical Director Lorin Miller, is an auditioned choral group of about 75 singers that performs with its own orchestra. The Chorale puts on two major concert series each year, in May and in December. Membership in the chorale is by audition, which takes place twice a year and can be arranged via the Chorale website,  www.thepopschorale.com. Prospective members must have the ability to both sing and dance, as each semester several professionally choreographed pieces are performed by the Chorale during each of our shows. Let’s understand this unique chapter of American history and also explore this rarely used portion of the Constitution which could find its way into the 2024 election.

Swearing appears to be part of the human condition, but it has been expressed in different ways throughout history. From the obscenities of ancient Rome to the religious oaths of the Middle Ages to the rice of racial slurs after World War II swearing continues to evolve and change in both practice and significance.

The Grass Valley Museum depicts the rich history from the Gold Rush days to 1930 with displays of furniture, art, objects d’art, clothing, musical instruments and artifacts of the Victorian era. The Museum also features large Old California Style paintings, a Victorian bedroom, Lola Montez’s bathtub, a table used for the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945 and many instruments and medicine from Dr. Jones the first doctor in Grass Valley. Today you can almost hear the echoes of children reciting their lessons as you stand behind the teacher’s desk in the restored classroom. These tours are limited to six people. There are ten steps to the second floor where the Museum is located. Tours are estimated to last 90 minutes. The Grass Valley Museum is located at 410 South Church Street, Grass Valley, two blocks from the historic downtown. Participants will provide their own transportation to and from the event. Registered members will meet instructor at location.

If you have the desire to play with others in an ensemble setting, and prior but not necessarily current experience, then join us on Wednesday nights for a musical adventure. We will work together to interpret and perform fun band literature. The class will culminate in a performance. Music builds community – come join us!

Step into history by touring Wakamatsu Farm, a cherished California historic landmark owned and managed by American River Conservancy. Nestled in Gold Hill near Placerville, Wakamatsu Farm is the site of the first Japanese Colony in America established in 1869. It is also the birthplace of the first Japanese American and resting place of Okei-san, the first Japanese immigrant and woman buried on American soil. Your 2.5-hour tour will focus on the Japanese Colony history and touch upon all occupants from ancient to modern times. Bring a bag lunch to eat while enjoying the scenery before heading back home.

We may have told our children where we want to be buried. But that is only the bare minimum. We need to openly talk to our family, partner, friends about how we want to die, before it is too late. Why is it so difficult to talk about our death? This will not be a deep philosophical inquiry. We will cover the basics of how to plan for our death. What we need to do now, before the grim reaper or dementia gets us.
