This continuing film class will take a new look at an OLD set of guidelines for success and happiness especially for women. Faced with a challenge at home or at work is SHE able to rise to the occasion? persevere? prove her ability to match others? when she is the ONLY woman in the room? can SHE have it all? We will watch the following three films and discuss themes plus share our own experiences in similar circumstances. The films include: The Contender (2000); Queen of Katwe (2016); She Said (2022)

Set in a boarding school in early 1920s Seville, Spain, the traditional education of girls is challenged by the arrival of a new professor who embraces global points of view that include the modernist perspective. Education reflects the steeped traditions of the city and the time, challenged by the arrival of European Modernism influencing literature, politics, and gender roles. This series examines intergenerational perspectives and challenges women faced from the female point of view. In Spanish with English subtitles. Historical material will accompany each episode.

Tom Hanks stars in three films that recount pivotal moments in history. "Bridge of Spies" relates the story of the lawyer who negotiates the release of a convicted CIA pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. Then Hanks joins Meryl Streep in "The Post," the story of the Washingon Post's attempts to publish the infamous Pentagon Papers. Finally, he is featured in "Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close," the story of a young boy coping with the loss of his father following the 9/11 attack on New York.
