This continuing film class will take a new look at an OLD set of guidelines for success and happiness especially for women. Faced with a challenge at home or at work is SHE able to rise to the occasion? persevere? prove her ability to match others? when she is the ONLY woman in the room? can SHE have it all? We will watch the following three films and discuss themes plus share our own experiences in similar circumstances. The films include: The Contender (2000); Queen of Katwe (2016); She Said (2022)

The narrative of 19th century Japanese immigration to California typically overlooks the contributions of women. This lecture course will complement the field trip to the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony Farm.

Happiness is a Choice………in later years. Most of us want to live a long, happy and healthy life with our remaining years, not one that is merely without disease. Happiness and Well Being is important as we age and can affect our physical, mental and emotional well-being.  Abraham Lincoln said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” He was right. We do have choices and there is a lot we can do to experience improved well-being and live out our life at an optimal level. Happiness is a Choice is an introductory series of four educational and experiential 1 1/2 hour sessions that is designed to help improve well-being and optimize everyday life of aging adults. It utilizes educational content, small groups and exercises to provide understanding and choices for daily living. 

This class will showcase the music and artists of the MTV decade. You’ll watch music videos, interviews with the artists, and learn their captivating personal stories. In the 80s, “New Wave” music gave us exciting new bands like U2, Talking Heads, the Pretenders, INXS, the Police, REM, and The Cars. The 80s were a great time for hitmakers like Madonna, Prince, Hall & Oates, Tina Turner and Genesis. American stars (Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp) produced the best songs of their careers. Guitar legends like Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, AC DC and Def Leppard electrified rock radio’s airwaves. You’ll also learn the real story behind the channel that changed the entire music industry – MTV.

Sometimes, though, forces collide that provide courts with unique opportunities to radically alter our laws. From famous examples such as Watergate to little known cases like the prosecution of drug kingpin Nicky Barnes, we will explore the dramatic stories of how our system can be upended.

Tom Hanks stars in three films that recount pivotal moments in history. Finally, he is featured in "Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close," the story of a young boy coping with the loss of his father following the 9/11 attack on New York.

Monthly gathering to discuss books ranging from historical fiction to non-fiction and classics. Short presentation by a member of the group focusing on facts about the author, historical setting or other interesting aspects of the book sets tone for discussion. Discussion is informal and participation is encouraged. Members will need to obtain their own books. Opening selection is "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus. Experience orchestral works from within by playing them with the OLLI Orchestra, an ensemble of music-loving amateurs. Our weekly rehearsals emphasize music appreciation and an atmosphere of mutual support. Making music builds community. We will present a concert for the public at the end of the semester. OLLI Orchestra is open to all instrumentalists of all ability. New or prospective members are welcome to come and sit in on a rehearsal before joining.

It has the advantages of regular exercise combined with a slowness of pace that western society so conspicuously lacks. The relaxed gentle movements of the T’ai Chi forms keep the body from being tense and awkward. Joseph Guida studied with and was trained by world renowned T’ai Chi Master Da Liu in the 1980’s. In the first class we will learn how to stand erect, balance on one foot and the opening movement. The second class will review the first class and move on to the second movement of the form.

The militia was a long-standing English institution transplanted to Britain's North American Colonies. Colonists were obligated to serve as soldiers in local conflicts. During the revolution, colonists took control of the militia system. Organized militias became a function of the federal and state governments. In the election of 1860 there was a mass militia movement to elect Lincoln as president and end slavery. Since 1990 there have been a growing number of unorganized militias including many groups that are anti-government.

The Pops Chorale, led by Artistic/Musical Director Lorin Miller, is an auditioned choral group of about 75 singers that performs with its own orchestra. The Chorale puts on two major concert series each year, in May and in December. Membership in the chorale is by audition, which takes place twice a year and can be arranged via the Chorale website,  www.thepopschorale.com. Prospective members must have the ability to both sing and dance, as each semester several professionally choreographed pieces are performed by the Chorale during each of our shows. Were you in Band in High School? Middle School? Do you wish you still played? Do you consider yourself a music loving amateur performer? If so, this class is for you! Welcome to the Truckee-Tahoe Community Band. If you have the desire to play with others in an ensemble setting, and prior but not necessarily current experience, then join us on Wednesday nights for a musical adventure. We will work together to interpret and perform fun band literature. The class will culminate in a performance. Music builds community – come join us!

Truckee-Tahoe Community Chorus: The course is designed for college-aged students through seniors for the study of selected styles and periods of music culminating in the performance of selected repertoire. The course curriculum includes discussion of musical elements, composition, vocabulary and history as well as vocal technique.

First beavers were sought for their fur to make hats, then beavers were considered pests that needed to be eradicated. We may have told our children where we want to be buried. But that is only the bare minimum. We need to openly talk to our family, partner, friends about how we want to die, before it is too late. Why is it so difficult to talk about our death? This will not be a deep philosophical inquiry. We will cover the basics of how to plan for our death. What we need to do now, before the grim reaper or dementia gets us.

Earp is one of the most memorable of Old West figures. More than 20 films have been made about him plus a popular TV series. But he wasn't like what the movies claimed...and he didn't think of himself as a lawman either. Roger Peterson interviewed three people who personally knew Earp. His work has been cited in Earp's biography and that of his third wife Josie, and American History magazine published Peterson's cover story on Earp's life. The Wild West History Association Journal gave the 2020 Best WWHA Journal Article to Peterson for his story "Wyatt Earp: Boomtown Sport."

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation and deep relaxation that combines principles of traditional Yoga Nidra with Western psychology. This course explores connecting to aspects of self that are always peaceful and at ease for happy and healthy aging of body and mind. Classes will begin with a small discussion portion before moving into guided meditation. No yoga or meditation experience required. Students will be seated or lying down for the majority of the class so please wear comfortable clothes and consider bringing a yoga mat but also comfort items like a blanket and pillow.
