Water and Wetlands Series

Water and Wetlands: Our Most Precious Resources

Keystone Species: Salmon, Beavers and Humans

Instructors: Joan Griffin, Joe Medeiros, Jim Haufler, Sean O’Brien
(Jim and Sean are local watershed experts and new instructors for OLLI)

Series Summary: Water, water, everywhere…but not a drop to… (share?)

Of the world’s total watery resources, only 1.2% is freshwater and 98% of this is locked up on glaciers, icecaps, and groundwater. Such precious remaining surface water is spread thinly among the world’s wetlands (rivers, lakes, marshes, pools, etc.) that support millions of species of organisms – the same organisms that breathe life into all of Earth’s biomes and ecosystems.

These wetland species sustain our terrestrial lives, providing food, shelter, oxygen, flood control, pollution filtration, and ad infinitum. Yet, we use our freshwater resources to dilute our pollutants, water our lawns and golf courses, flush our toilets, and water our most-thirsty non-essential food crops. Quite literally, we treat our most precious resource like….?
