Have you and your loved ones had meaningful conversations around your end of life wishes? How about their end of life wishes? Often we avoid these conversations or assume that our loved ones will know what to do for us, but this time in our lives deserves more attention and care. Even if you have your basic advance care directive documented, you are invited to explore the process of including loved ones in your planning and wishes through awareness and conversation. This 90 minute course will provide interaction around common scenarios we find ourselves in when end of life is approaching, and how we can better prepare ourselves with basic tools and ideas around starting meaningful conversations. Walk away from this class with a tool kit including a legal advance care directive document, the Five Wishes (the advance directive with a heart and soul), as well as tools to guide difficult conversations and answer potential legal questions. Advance care planning is a process that takes place over a lifetime, all are welcome to engage in this experience no matter where you are in your planning process.

Historian Colin Woodard, in his fascinating book, argues that the reason Americans have never been able to resolve fundamental issues (e.g., is this a Christian nation or secular? Which political party defends American values and which undermines them?) is because there isn’t, and never has been, one America but several. Woodard details the histories of eleven distinct regional cultures that evolved from the vastly different groups of immigrants who took control of the lands that became the United States. Includes 4-page handout with summary and links to related articles.

Love and intimacy are something all human beings crave, and so many of our favorite films are about the search for it. There’s a comfort in the familiar tropes of the genre, starting with the “Meet Cute,” and knowing that love will overcome all obstacles. So, as it gets colder outside, let’s take a journey to New York (where so many favorite rom coms take place) in search of some romance (and a few good laughs). In this class we will watch and discuss “You’ve Got Mail” (1998); “Moonstruck” (1987); “One Fine Day” (1996); and “When Harry Met Sally” (1989).

Eleanor Roosevelt was often his conscience, reminding him to do what was right. - Sacred Nation: Reading American Religious Nationalism as Literature (NCC-Grass Valley)
-
Instructor: Maxwell Pingeon

America’s national identity has long been shaped by religious stories of divine destiny, chosenness, and sacred purpose. From the Puritan “City on a Hill” address to presidential inauguration speeches, this course reads the evolution of American religious nationalism as an open-ended literary tradition, drawing on genres like the epic, romance, tragedy, jeremiad, and apocalyptic fantasy.
Standing in contrast to these dominant narratives of the nation are the counter-traditions crafted by abolitionists, Indigenous leaders, Black nationalists, Catholic immigrants, and religious fringe movements. Through foundational texts, sermons, speeches, and popular culture, we will investigate how the idea of America is imagined and contested over time. How do religious and political communities construct stories of belonging, exclusion, and destiny? And how do these stories reflect their geographic, cultural, and historical contexts?
Weekly topics may include the Puritan jeremiad, Manifest Destiny as epic, the Civil War as messianic crisis, Black nationalist prophecy, Indigenous spiritual resistance, Catholic and Mormon exceptionalism, and more contemporary visions of apocalypse and conspiracy. No prior background in religious studies or literary theory is required—just an interest in how stories shape the world we live in.

But the most compelling figures in the Warner Bros. story are its sagacious leader, Mo Ostin, and his unlikely crew of hippies, eccentrics, and enlightened executives who created the most successful record label in history. Earp spent less than eight years in police work. He followed the boomtowns ending up in LA. A reporter there once asked him, "Mr. Earp, what was it like to be a marshall in the Old West?" The old man replied, "I was a gambler, not a policeman." Peterson interviewed three people who personally knew Earp. He published three articles on Earp. His research is cited in Earp's biography and the bio of Earp's third wife.
