Join Civil War Lecturer Doug Bonetti for an informative and fun filled day at the historic Sacramento Cemetery on April 9th from 9 to 11:00. Included in our morning is Civil War music from the talented Middle Sisters. Throw in Civil War cake, hardtack, and the famous Irish Brigade Cocktail and you have a memorable and educational day!

Using Bus: We will provide complimentary roundtrip transportation on a Sierra College bus from the Rocklin Campus. We will meet at the Dietrich Theater and leave promptly at 8:15am.

Drive Yourself: It is recommended to park in the Target parking lot on Broadway and Riverside. Plan to arrive at 8:30am for a 9am start. Enter on Broadway Main Entrance.

Glenn Miller Orchestra and Dinner in Grass Valley

The World-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra brings timeless classics like In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Pennsylvania 6-5000, String of Pearls, and Tuxedo Junction back to the stage. Even 80 years after founding his famous 18 piece orchestra Glenn Miller's music is alive and well. Following the performance at The Center for the Arts, we will have dinner at the fabulous Cirino’s Italian Restaurant in Grass Valley. $125 pp includes bus, dinner and performance. (32 people); $100 for 10 people who wish to drive themselves.

Discover how Fair Oaks Bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, became an integral part of growing the agricultural economies and community services of Orangevale, Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks.

This popular excursion, with OLLI Instructor Terry McAteer, brings you inside the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City for an up-close look at a working jail. First, you will travel in a Sierra College bus to the Nevada County/Sierra College campus for a working lunch where we will discuss the history of the American penal system and current challenges. We will then bus to the jail for a 90-minute hands-on experience. Participants will gain incredible insights about our penal system as we visit housing pods, the intake/booking center, the medical unit and kitchen. Nevada County OLLI members can meet at the Nevada County campus at Noon. Limited to 25.

We will stay at the Stratford Inn a few blocks from the theaters (breakfast included). En route, we will visit the Ide Adobe State Park and the Sisson Fish Hatchery for a picnic lunch (provided, you provide a drink).

The first evening we will head to the nearby historic town of Jacksonville for a wine tasting at South Stage Cellars and then you can explore the many dining options in that very cute town. Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. we will have a behind-the-scenes tour of the festival venues. Following the tour, you can walk around the adorable town of Ashland and have lunch before seeing the Tony Award winner, “Raisin in the Sun” at 1:30 pm. After the play, a rest is a good idea back at the Stratford Inn before heading out for dinner and the 8 pm showing of Shakespeare's comedy-- A Midsummer Night's Dream. Wednesday morning, following breakfast, we will head back to Rocklin. 

In total: two plays, a behind-the-scenes tour, lodging with breakfast, picnic lunch, wine tasting, transportation by a Sierra College bus. You are responsible for two lunches and two dinners. Grab a friend and come along!

We will enjoy a short and flat hike around the many blooms along with a picnic lunch which is provided. Prior to the wildflower walk, we will start our day at the Oroville Chinese Temple built in 1863. Oroville had the largest Chinese population north of Sacramento and this National Historical Registry set of buildings houses the three temples, costume collection, tapestry room, medicinal herb shop and council room. The Museum also features large Old California Style paintings, a Victorian bedroom, Lola Montez’s bathtub, a table used for the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945 and many instruments and medicine from Dr. Jones the first doctor in Grass Valley. Today you can almost hear the echoes of children reciting their lessons as you stand behind the teacher’s desk in the restored classroom.

These tours are limited to six people. There are ten steps to the second floor where the Museum is located. Tours are estimated to last 90 minutes. The Grass Valley Museum is located at 410 South Church Street, Grass Valley, two blocks from the historic downtown. Participants will provide their own transportation to and from the event. Registered members will meet instructor at location.

Rocklin Historical Society docents will explain the history of sites in Rocklin, including the largest of the granite quarries (now site of Quarry Adventures Park), the Rocklin History Museum, the site of the Transcontinental Railroad roundhouse and the Chinese settlement. Along Front Street, Rocklin's original downtown, visitors will learn the history of the Firehouse replica and Old St. Mary's Chapel. The tour will finish with a box lunch on the patio. We will provide roundtrip transportation on a Sierra College bus from the Rocklin Campus. We will meet at the Dietrich Theater and leave promptly at 9am. Price includes bus transportation and lunch. Join Dr. Terry McAteer for an understanding of the geology, hydrology, ecosystems, dendrology, Native American history and history of Yosemite within our National Park system. We will be staying at the Yosemite Lodge. Transportation and three lunches included. You are responsible for two dinners and two breakfasts. A pre-trip Zoom meeting will be scheduled along with pre-trip readings of John Muir in Yosemite. Three short hikes will take place on flat ground of up to one mile. Free time will also be scheduled for you to commune with nature.
