Have you and your loved ones had meaningful conversations around your end of life wishes? How about their end of life wishes? Often we avoid these conversations or assume that our loved ones will know what to do for us, but this time in our lives deserves more attention and care. Even if you have your basic advance care directive documented, you are invited to explore the process of including loved ones in your planning and wishes through awareness and conversation. This 90 minute course will provide interaction around common scenarios we find ourselves in when end of life is approaching, and how we can better prepare ourselves with basic tools and ideas around starting meaningful conversations. Walk away from this class with a tool kit including a legal advance care directive document, the Five Wishes (the advance directive with a heart and soul), as well as tools to guide difficult conversations and answer potential legal questions. Advance care planning is a process that takes place over a lifetime, all are welcome to engage in this experience no matter where you are in your planning process.

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the U.S government, the media, and most national institutions quickly established the "official story" of what led to and occurred on that fateful day. At 25 years on, that story is not so certain. Questions have been raised. Through viewing segments of an acclaimed documentary and in-class discussion, students can confront these questions and consider whether they have merit. It will not change the outcome, but it may give new insights.

What constitutes a life well-lived? What are the ingredients for lasting happiness? We'll explore the findings of those who continue to research this topic. 

According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of American adults have some form of cardiovascular or chronic disease. Medical analysis has shown that the quality of our nutrition is a critical factor in determining personal health. A positive change in what we eat can delay and reverse serious chronic diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, T2 diabetes, and lessen the chances of developing dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers. We will discuss a proven process to align your daily nutrition with the core principles of eating healthy to live a long, healthy life. D-Day June 6, 1944, was one of the most important days in World War II. Well, D-Day is the word described to the day. The amount of planning, Work, logistics and luck played a huge part in it success this class will discuss that while D-Day is the tip of the iceberg. Most of the work was done before.

These three body functions--digestion, skin and sleep--are distinct, but, oh, so necessary for good health and energy.  We'll explore each in the way it works, how it gets disrupted, and how to help remedy disorders or prevent problems.

Using important decisions made by U.S. presidents and landmark Supreme Court rulings, we will apply a series of ethical criteria to some of these historic decisions. Ethical thinking not only involves making judgements of right and wrong, good and bad, but also the motivations and intentions of the decision makers. Using ethical criteria developed by psychologists Maslow, Kohlberg, and Glasser, we will build a broader view of the potential factors that affected these decisions and that can be applied to our modern times. This course will encourage class participation discussing these decisions.

AI has brought benefits to senior community by enabling independence, safety, and social connection through smart home technology, virtual assistants, and health monitoring. Some technologies provide assistance in daily tasks, medication management, and fall detection. Seniors now have more tools to enhance aging in place. We’ll learn how the main Jazz standards and the Great American Songbook were built, by artists like Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, etc., and how their legacy influenced Leiber and Stoller, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Kiss, Slash and many more.

National Geographic photographer, Joel Sartore started the Photo Ark in 2006 when he was homebound in Lincoln, Nebraska caring for his sick wife and their three children. In order to continue working, he decided to photograph some of the animals at the Children's Zoo near his home. This led him to create what he called a Photo Ark recording images of 12,000 species in captivity as a way to promote animal conservation. The 25-year project has received worldwide acclaim and has grown toward the current goal of recording images of 25,000 species.

Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are Agatha Christie’s best-known detectives.  In this class we will look at two novels featuring these sleuths: "Death on the Nile" and "The Body in the Library".  While the two novels seem very different—Miss Marple and Poirot have little in common and the settings of the novels couldn’t be much further apart—we will think about the ways in which both books resonate with each other.  For example, in what ways do the respective settings function as characters? What is the role of the detective (beyond simply solving the central puzzle)?  How do the novels comment on or reflect social and cultural conventions? 

The Constitution of the United States was created during the summer of 1787 in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall four years after the Treaty of Paris secured American independence. What happened at these epic meetings? Learn about George Washington’s role at the convention, Alexander Hamilton’s 5-hour speech, the tension between the large and small states, and the dramatic moments when the convention came close to failure. Thankfully, James Madison kept articulate notes of each day, and we will learn what unfolded at this convention that will lead to a deeper understanding of our Constitution.

Using AI for genealogy is a hot topic, and many “how-to” programs and webinars are available. This is NOT a how-to-use-AI-for-genealogy presentation. It’s a one-hour description of my own “adventures” using AI, with examples of egregious AI mistakes as well as excellent, helpful results that saved me lots of time. We will travel by Sierra College bus or private auto to visit the National Historic District of Locke in Sacramento County with OLLI Instructor Terry McAteer. Slainte! (To Your Health in Gaelic) This class will explore and celebrate the history of the Irish in America. The Scotch-Irish arrived first and moved to Appalachia then came the Potato Famine hoards to the inner cities in the 1850's. We will delve into the anti- Irish Catholic movements such as the Know Nothing Party and the Knights of the White Camelia through to the 1960 election of JFK. We'll also enjoy some tales, and Irish/American music along the way. We all have a wee bit of Irish (blarney) in all of us!

A fun, lively, informative showcase and discussion of the most iconic and impactful ads of the past 100 years, including the cultural, socio-economic, and marketplace dynamics at that time for contextual relevance to understand why the ads were created. We'll also peek into the future of advertising and go behind the scenes to learn what it takes to create iconic ads. (It's not all Mad Men, but close.) You'll never look at advertising the same way again.

The Pops Chorale, led by Artistic/Musical Director Lorin Miller, is an auditioned choral group of about 75 singers that performs with its own orchestra. The Chorale puts on two major concert series each year, in May and in December. Membership in the chorale is by audition, which takes place twice a year and can be arranged via the Chorale website,  www.thepopschorale.com. Prospective members must have the ability to both sing and dance, as each semester several professionally choreographed pieces are performed by the Chorale during each of our shows. Meet J. Parker Whitney, who was 17 when he arrived in San Francisco in 1852 with 10 cents in his pocket. For 20 years he explored the U.S., trying his hand at various business ventures, eventually returning to Rocklin where he developed an estate that covered nearly 29 square miles. 

This course offers a practical overview of the senior care journey while emphasizing the importance of caregiver well-being. Participants will explore in-home care, out-of-home placement options, and strategies for navigating care transitions and medical settings with confidence. The course also provides essential advocacy tools to help caregivers understand their rights and effectively support their aging loved ones. In addition, meaningful self-care strategies are introduced to help caregivers sustain their own health and resilience over time.

Our first stop on this fall color three-day adventure will be Mt. Shasta City where we will meet with a fisheries biologist at Sisson Fish Hatchery to discuss the health of North State waterways. Dinner, the first night is at the elegant McCloud Lodge built in 1916 and lodging will be at the Best Western in town. The next morning takes us to MacArthur-Burney State Park then onto a picnic lunch at Lassen National Pak. We will then be on a ranger-led hike through the lava beds and boiling steam pots. Our group then heads to Chester on the shores of beautiful Lake Almanor for dinner at the Almanor West Grill and lodging again at the Best Western Lodge in Chester. On our final day following breakfast, we will have a tour of Collins Lumber Mill and discuss the state of public and private lands with a timber expert and the drive down the spectacular Feather River Canyon to Oroville and back to Sierra College. Everything is included except any alcohol beverages.

"The War to End All Wars" was what historians at the time described World War I. But only 20 years after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War I, the Second World War started. This class will explore how the end of World War I really set the stage for World War II.

At noon, we will join the monks for a 20-minute prayer session before enjoying a bag lunch (provided)-- you supply a drink. Following lunch, we will enjoy a five-wine fleet tasting of their award winning wines. The New Clairvaux Winery was named Winery of the Year at the California State Fair.
