The central consciousness of all of Austen's novels is a woman, and the reader's perception of the fictional world Austen creates is inevitably guided by that consciousness. These talks will attempt to sidestep the influence of this powerful figure, and to explore from a different angle the variety of men that Austen has created--fathers and sons, brothers, cousins, lovers, clergymen, villains, servants. Consideration will be given to filmed adaptations of the novels as well as to the written texts.

We will take a ferry from Scrabster on the northeast coast of Scotland, passing the famous Old Man of Hoy on our way to the village of Stromness, on the western end of the Main Island. We will explore both the famous neolithic sites, as well as some that are not easy to get to. The most famous Orkadian is John Rea, well known as an intrepid explorer and friend of the native people in the Northwest Territories of Canada, where I canoed on the Keele River - but that is another story and maybe another OLLI program!

The frontier is that amorphous space between the town and the wilderness, between the violence we have become accustomed to and the savagery of the unknown. In True Grit a young girl crosses that space seeking justice for her murdered father. The class will examine her quest in the novel and the movies it spawned.
