We will discuss the chaotic history of what are now six, maybe seven separate countries and cultures divided by geography and religion. This discussion will include attention to Ivo Andric's novel, The Bridge Over The Drina, arguably the best book to read to understand how this region became so splintered and violent. Andric won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. Our program will include many photos of the speaker’s and his wife’s tour of these countries in the spring of 2026.

Perhaps no episode in modern history can match the Russian Revolution for high drama and long-term significance. We get: [1] a breathtaking narrative of events (two convulsive revolutions in a single year, followed by an epic civil war); [2] the clashes of major historic figures (Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, just for starters!); and [3] consequences that, for good or ill, deeply influenced the course of the 20th century and beyond (without the threat of Communism…, no Fascism, or World War II, or Cold War, as we know them. And without Leninism as a model, no Maoist China).

Howard Carter made one of the greatest discoveries in archaeology when he uncovered the tomb of king Tutankhamun in 1922. However, recent discoveries and applications of new scientific technologies have now told us more about the life and identity of the young king, as well as about the tumultuous period of the New Kingdom in which he lived. Meanwhile, long unanswered questions about Tut's suspected royal father, King Akhenaten, have begun to be answered through separate discoveries. Not only can we now confirm Akhenaten's paternity of king Tut, but also we can further understand the radical nature of Akhenaten's daring personal mission to transform the religion and culture of ancient Egypt. This class examines Akhenaten's program as arguably history's first monotheist, focusing on the unprecedented art and architecture of his reign, and follows his achievements—and failures—into the period of his famous young heir.

Participants will create their own, simple, winter landscape. This painting could be a frameable work of art. It could also be the basis of a printable holiday greeting card. To do this winter landscape, participants will practice three valuable and fun watercolor techniques: wet-into-wet, resist, and painting in layers of watercolor. This is a step-by-step process with time to practice each technique, all in a supportive environment. No prior experience is required. Each of the class's two sessions lasts two hours.

The year 1970 was one of great change in American history, but it was also a year that produced some of the best popular music ever recorded, including tracks by the Beatles, the Jackson 5, Janis Joplin, and Simon & Garfunkel. Their songs have been part of the soundtrack of your life, but do you know the stories behind them? Donnie Summerlin will count down ten of the most interesting musical moments of 1970 and share their history. The session will be enhanced by music clips, videos, and photographs that give life to these entertaining stories.

This presentation is designed to help older adults feel more confident and prepared when navigating hospitals, rehabilitation stays, and returning home after a medical event. It focuses on practical steps you can take before, during, and after a health crisis to protect your safety, independence, and peace of mind. As we age, medical situations can change quickly. A fall, sudden illness, or unexpected hospitalization can become a turning point. This session explains what a “crisis” really means, when needs increase beyond what has been manageable, and why preparation is the key to reducing stress and preventing complications. The overall message is empowering: While medical systems can feel overwhelming, preparation and advocacy make a significant difference. By organizing information, asking questions, and identifying trusted support, older adults can maintain greater control, clarity, and confidence throughout the healthcare journey.
