In October 1940, the Red and Black ran five lines about a Black bandleader hired for an SAE house dance: "Red McAllister and his negro orchestra will play." Who was he? The newspaper trail answers in three names across thirty-four years — pianist, bandleader, agency owner, manager of Atlanta's Royal Peacock for twenty years. He packaged a touring R&B revue a decade before Motown. He supplied the opener when Otis Redding played UGA in 1964. This class recovers one architect of the Southern Black music economy from the primary sources he left behind.

Tax records are often overlooked, yet they can reveal some of the most telling details about our ancestors. Found at local, state, and national levels—and spanning different time periods—these records can place individuals in a specific location, track changes in wealth and property, distinguish between people with the same name, and even hint at relationships. In this session, we’ll explore the wide variety of tax records available, learn where to find them, and uncover the hidden clues they hold for building and strengthening your family history.

In this class, we will consider Leonard Cohen's 9th studio album, The Future (1992). Written during a time that witnessed both the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Los Angeles riots following the arrest and beating of Rodney King, this album is more political than most of Cohen's works. Among other things, it offers meditations on the nature and state of American democracy that still seem pertinent over 30 years after the album's initial release. Discussion will focus on the tracks "Democracy," "The Future," and "Anthem," but we will also consider the shape and nature of the entire album as it offers insight into Cohen's career as a singer/songwriter/poet and into the state of the world then and now.
