Accidental Alchemy: Art, Intention, & the Frame
Explore how symbolism, framing, and abstraction shape the way we create and interpret images in a digital world in Accidental Alchemy: Art, Intention, and the Frame, the first of two sessions in the Digital Shamanism series. In this four-week session, students will examine historical and cultural approaches to meaning-making—such as reliquaries, sigils, knots, and sacred geometry—and reinterpret them through contemporary digital and mixed-media art practices, focusing on exemplary pioneering works by Marcel Duchamp, Brian Eno, Jay DeFeo and others, as well as on critical texts such as The Golden Bough. Through lecture, discussion, and hands-on projects using both digital tools and traditional media, participants will create a series of small works that explore layering, scale, personal iconography, and the “frame” itself. Ideal for artists, designers, and curious creatives who enjoy conceptual exploration and process-driven work. This course can be taken before The IndraNet, or on its own.
Digital Shamanism is two four-week sessions that invite students to explore how humans encode meaning through symbols, images, and systems—past, present, and digital. Drawing from art history, cultural traditions, and contemporary media, this course examines how practices once used to focus intention, tell stories, or transmit knowledge can be reimagined as tools for creative exploration today. Through discussion and hands-on experimentation with both digital and traditional media, participants investigate symbolism, visual language, chance, and generative processes as ways to better understand how ideas move through culture and technology.
