Stress Recognition and Resolution for Telecommunicators (Online)   

This is an independent study, self-paced course.

This exciting and fact-filled class will provide you with information that can help you identify and effectively manage your personal on-the-job stress levels. By explaining the factors underlying the stress phenomena, you will gain valuable insight as you develop your own personal strategy for working more effectively with your coworkers and supervisors. A broad spectrum of topics, ranging from identifying types of stress to physical fitness will be presented.

We will also address the issue of violence in today’s workplace and delve into the causes and consequences of workplace conflict. You will learn how stress and anger might escalate into potentially violent situations. Various types of workplace violence, ranging from inappropriate language to physical actions, will be identified along with a discussion about what to do if you believe you, or a coworker, have become a target and victim.

This class will bring together telecommunicators, supervisors and managers to give you the opportunity to network, discuss problems and work toward solutions. Upon conclusion of the course, you should be armed with the skills and information that will help you work more effectively and safely in the stressful communications center environment.

  • The “super dispatcher” syndrome

  • When stress and anger turn into workplace violence
  • What you should do if you become a target
  • Designing your own “Personal Plan for De-Stressing”


Telecommunicators, shift supervisors and communications center managers; the CTO; probationary telecommunicators who are still learning how to manage their workplace stress; and the sworn individual in the chain-of-command to whom the communications manager reports.

This course is restricted to sworn and non-sworn law enforcement personnel.

Online Details

Online environment:

This is an independent study, self-paced course. Although there are no specific times that you must be online, you will be required to complete assignments by the deadlines posted within the course. You should plan to dedicate approximately eight (8) hours to the course activities. You must be committed to the course and invest the time necessary for successful completion.

Instructors are available to answer your questions during each module via the help forum. The course must be completed within 30 days upon registration. Once the 30-day period has ended, you may no longer have access and be required to re-enroll. Additional fees may apply.

Computer requirements: You will complete the course entirely online. A dependable broadband internet connection with a Windows or Mac computer and Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download) are required.

Registration and Fees

Full payment must accompany all registrations. You may register online and pay with your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card, or you may download a Registration Form and mail it to IPTM with a check.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

Complete the Cancellation Request Form and return it to IPTM. No telephone cancellations will be accepted. A 20% administrative fee will be assessed to all refunds if the cancellation request is received within 14 days of the course start date. In lieu of a refund, student substitutions can be made or a credit can be issued for a future course. No refunds will be given for no-shows. If materials for an online course were sent to the student, the appropriate materials and shipping costs will be deducted from the refund amount. Materials may be returned to IPTM in their original condition at the student's expense. Once IPTM has received and inspected them, the refund will be processed.

Due to the automated format of online independent study courses and Videos on Demand (VoDs), no refunds or substitutions can be made after registration.

Course Confirmations

A minimum number of registrations must be received for an in-person class to run as scheduled. When the minimum criterion has been met, written confirmation will be emailed to you. Please do not travel or make airline reservations until you receive written notification confirming that the course will run as scheduled.

Most locations are served by several major airlines. Transportation, food and lodging are the responsibility of the student.
