    The art of belly dance dates back thousands of years and is known for its feminine grace and isolated body movements. Belly dance will help you develop flexibility, strength, and improve posture. In this 4-week beginners course, you will learn the breakdown of the basic moves used in belly dance and then apply them to a full routine. We will progress through the choreography each week, and at the end of the session, you will have a beautiful dance to show for your efforts. 

    Students should wear clothes comfortable for exercise.

    This class prepares students to receive a Flagger Certification card, which is valid for three years in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Students must be at least 18 years old and bring a valid State ID card or Driver's License to the class. There is an open-book test at the end of class, in which you must have a passing score of 80% to receive your certification.

    Course Details:

    • The class is full-day for full certification and partial-day for recertification. We do not offer shorter recertification classes at this time unless you request Customized Training for a full class of recertifications. Contact communityed@pencol.edu or 360-417-5683 for more information.
    • Students receive a Traffic Control Flagger Certification Handbook (yours to keep and reference on the job).
    • Students take an open-book test at the end of the class.

    Our ceramics courses are designed for students from all levels- from the absolute beginner to experienced potters and sculptors. Classes are held in our beautiful, fully equipped studio. Eighteen potter's wheels, a slab roller, canvas covered work tables, ample storage space and the use of studio tools as well as clay, glaze, and firings are all included in the course fee. All that is missing is you!

    Please do not bring in any outside clay or glazes as they may not be compatible with our ceramic studio materials. Classes may include students from multiple sessions.


    This class meets twice weekly over seven sessions. 

    The potter's wheel allows you to quickly and efficiently create pots of uniform shape, size, and thickness. The wheel is a tool that helps the artist make aesthetic decisions based on the mechanical steps of operation. There are two beginner forms to master on the potter's wheel, and from those, anything can be made and altered into shape: the cylinder & the bowl. In this class students will receive one on one instruction and encouragement for a hands-on experience to learn the aspects of wheel thrown pottery. Open to students ages 16 and up.

We'll begin by working from photographs, learning step-by-step techniques that make sketching and painting accessible for all levels, with the goal to take our new skills outdoors in the Plein Air style. The College Campus is a beautiful, scenic setting, perfect to observe and paint nature. Mini landscapes are perfect for travel journaling or simply enjoying the art of observation.

    All materials provided - including a watercolor travel journal, folding palette, water brush pen, paints, and writing utensils.

    This course is perfect for absolute beginners eager to learn how to play chess with confidence. Starting with the basics¿rules, piece movements, and board setup¿then moving into key opening principles, simple tactics, and winning strategies. Through guided practice games and interactive exercises, you'll build skills step by step. By the end of the course, you¿ll be able to play a complete game, recognize common checkmate patterns, and start thinking like a chess player. No prior experience needed¿just curiosity and a willingness to learn!

    This class is offered in partnership with Clark College. Required: Ability to use Zoom (free video conferencing software) on a PC, tablet, or phone.     Learn about the geological forces that shaped the Olympic Peninsula. Classroom presentations will be followed with an extensive field trip to important geological sites (Dungeness Spit, Hurricane Ridge, and Tongue Point). Students will view not only the natural beauty of the region, but also see first-hand the rocks and geological structures and landforms of the area. We'll also look at tide pools at Tongue Point, and we have often seen black bears along Hurricane Ridge Road. Great class for hikers, naturalists, rock hounds, and anyone wanting to connect to this area's geological treasures!

    Weather permitting, students are invited to stay after class for a potluck BBQ at Log Cabin Resort, Lake Crescent.

    This half-day workshop offers participants the chance to gather in a community of writers, explore the benefits of a traditional writer’s workshop, and develop their skills as a poet. Part seminar, part workshop, this course is for poets in the beginning phases of their creative careers interested in getting their poetry into the world. We will cover techniques for revision, the elements of strong work, strategies for fueling the creative engine, and the nuances of submitting poems for publication. 

    Participants will leave this course with one or two poems thoughtfully reviewed by both the instructor and the workshop group, strategies for deepening their writing practice, and a basic knowledge of the unique world of literary magazine publication.

    By gathering a community of aspiring local writers, exploring the formal elements of successful poems, and emphasizing the methods of the traditional peer-centered writing workshop, this course will engage participants in the refinement of their poetry. With particular attention paid to the processes by which poems come to be published in regional and national literary magazines, this course is for the emerging and enthusiastic poet looking to get their work our into the world. Outside of the formal workshop, we will discuss the various online methods of submitting unpublished work, the particulars of choosing where to send one's work, and the nuances of interfacing with editorial staff.

    Class will be suitably divided between the discussion of the formal elements of successful poetry, poetic styles and movements, or navigating submission platforms and a traditional workshop.

    • Identify the elements of a strong poem Understand their individual creative processes

    Explore the geology of three popular beaches on the Olympic Peninsula. An evening classroom presentation with rock lab will be followed by a field trip to Beach 4 (south of Ruby Beach), Ruby Beach, and Rialto Beach (west of Forks). Students will caravan to field trip locations starting at the Forks Campus, and details will be discussed during the classroom portion.     This all-levels class combines yoga postures, breathing exercise, meditation, and relaxation to help improve strength, flexibility, balance, concentration, and stress management. Classes will focus on building a strong foundation based on the principles of alignment, so expect an emphasis on simplicity, repetition, and ease of movement. This experience is suitable for those new to yoga as well as seasoned practitioners seeking a continued understanding of basic yoga poses. Participants should dress in comfortable layered clothing they can move freely in. A limited number of yoga mats and props are available to borrow, so you're encouraged to bring your own if you have them.

    This course is designed for the artist and/or hobbyist and will cover welding safety, oxyacetylene welding and plasma cutting. Various techniques of metal forming and design will be covered.
