Antarctica is bigger than the U.S. and Mexico combined, with ice sheets in East Antarctica reaching up to two miles thick. It’s my favorite continent—but who actually owns it? Getting there is an adventure in itself: after flying to the southern tip of South America, you’ll sail for two days aboard a converted Russian passenger ship, staffed by a mostly English-speaking crew. With good weather, you might make two landings in one day—by zodiac!

June 6 – Shelley Blanton-StroudCopy Boy, Tom Boy, Poster Girl, An Unlikely Prospect

Copy BoyBio: Shelley Blanton-Stroud grew up in California’s Central Valley, the daughter of Dust Bowl immigrants who made good on their ambition to get out of the field. She is recently retired from teaching writing in the California State University system. She has served as President of the Board of 916 Ink, an arts-based creative writing nonprofit for children, and serves on the Board of Advisors for the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies at Claremont McKenna College. She previously co-directed Stories on Stage Sacramento, where actors performed the stories of established and emerging authors.

Books: Her historical mystery series—Copy Boy, Tomboy, and Poster Girl—follows Jane Benjamin, a cross-dressing, tomato-picking, San Francisco gossip columnist who investigates crime stories that never make the front page. Her fourth novel, An Unlikely Prospect (She Writes Press, August 2025), is based on the little-known V-J Day San Francisco Peace Riot, featuring a widow publisher who fights to find her voice in 1945 journalism.

This poses to be Terry McAteer’s wildest field trip. We will carpool to the “towns” (some existing and some just rubble) north of Nevada City. Starting in Bridgeport then moving to French Corral (where the world’s first long distance telephone line was established and the only diamond mine in CA) and stopping at the nearly ghost town of Cherokee (pop 600) to visit the cemetery for some pioneer tombstone rubbings before hitting the Brass Rail Bar in North San Juan which was frequented by Black Bart (Babe’s Place Brothel was upstairs). We’ll continue northward through the “town” of Pike onto the town of Allegany (one of the best gold mining districts in the state) with the famous 16-1 gold mine. We’ll have lunch at Casey’s Place before checking out the Mining Museum in town. After leaving town we’ll head to Forest City to view the dance hall of this mining ghost town (pop. 1400 in 1852) before an afternoon refreshment in the historic town of Camptonville. Our final stop will be an early dinner at the famous Willo Steakhouse just outside of Nevada City to revisit the day’s adventures. A Zoom call prior will establish carpools, etc.. $90 p/p includes lunch, soft drinks, admissions and dinner. Carpoolers will also chip-in for gas. 35 people

In 1851, San Francisco mayor Charles Brenham referred to his numerous French constituents as "one of the two great elements (with Americans) that compose the population of California." This strong French presence so early in the history of our State, remains one of the little-known facets of that world-wide epic.

In her first session, Claudine will explore, with pictures and original texts, what triggered the rush of Frenchmen to California starting in September 1849. How they escaped from endless riots and the collapse of social order in their embattled nation, only to land, after a six-month voyage around Cape Horn, in a city that had no law, no infrastructure, no sanitation, no raison d'être except for gold. They survived, prevailed, and with their special talents and skills, they helped shape the city so often called "Paris of the Pacific."

In her second session, Claudine will show how prevalent these pioneers were in the goldfields as well so that "French" is the most common name of nationality in the toponymy of the Gold Country. She will follow the success stories of three lucky Frenchmen who found a fortune on the banks of the Yuba and Bear rivers, will touch on Baptiste Charbonneau’s life story, and provide a few examples of valuable early reports on our gold towns by French visitors.

Climate change is nothing new. A few thousand years ago, much of North America was covered in ice and glaciers. They are still retreating, the climate is warming once again, and the land is still rising now that it is relieved of some of the weight of the ice. This lecture explains how glaciers formed then and now, how they scar the ground beneath them, and how important they are to the water cycle.

Growing up in the American West is an adventure steeped in mythology, the gilded lore of cowboys and Indians, the rugged individualist, tall in the saddle, taming the wilderness, prying a living from the land. That's the legacy. The West was always just west of wherever we were at the time. Kentucky was way west when Daniel Boone carved the Wilderness Road out of the Cumberland Gap. In that sense, we all are a product of the Mythologies of the Modern West. This is a study of conflict between that romantic notion and the practical outcomes of "settling" the region, of trying to come to terms with the iconic images that inspire us and the disquieting realizations that come our way. This class looks at both the legendary and the practical worlds of the Modern West, the real people and their fictional counterparts, the cowboys and Indians ordinary and extraordinary both met along the way, living with the Blackfeet people, and buying movie star Gary Cooper's home. It's the story of a city boy finding his way in the contemporary West that is presented via lecture and multi-media with discussion.

Descendants of these fish have survived in this same pond for over 160 years. Terry McAteer will lead you on this relatively flat 1 1/2-mile (roundtrip) hike at 7000 feet elevation to lunch at the pond and feed the catfish. The views are spectacular! It is the hidden force accelerating climate change, Methane accounts for around 1% of total greenhouse gases but around 21% of global greenhouse emissions. Even though much less methane is emitted than carbon dioxide, methane is 84+ times more potent than carbon dioxide in the first 20 years of its emissions. We'll examine ways that methane pollution is being reduced from cows and new and old wells.

This class examines music, media, and culture at a time of profound social upheaval. The intersection where they met in post-War America was pivotal, the effect they had on each other was unprecedented and altered them in ways that still impact society today. At its core is a classic struggle between art and commerce, innovation and orthodoxy, freedom and control. And it's only rock 'n' roll. With a mix of lecture, audio-visual, music, and discussion, we study why it's a story worth remembering and retelling through our personal narrative of the time.

Did you know? The e-waste output in one year weighed the equivalent of 350 cruise ships? Or if you piled a year of America's e-waste on an interstate highway it would be a pile that was 77 miles long. Yes, there are efforts to recycle old cell phones and TVs, but these efforts are falling far short of solving the problem. This is why e-ways is our biggest recycling challenge.

In the late 19th century, Ellen Swallow Richards helped developed the new science of home economics with the goal of involving women in the public sphere of social activism rather than simply teaching them in effective ways to run their households. However, the movement quickly shifted its focus to educating professional experts. Consequently, the political goals of the home economics movement were superseded by the professionalization of domesticity. This class will look at the history of home economics and its representation in popular culture of the time. It will also look at how the movement led, in part, to women becoming radio broadcasters—known as radio homemakers—in the early days of radio.

Smedley Butler (USMC) was one of the most decorated warfighters of his time, participating in nearly every U.S. conflict from 1898 to WWI. He played a key role in expanding American influence, from annexing the Philippines to leading military actions in Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and China. After retiring, Butler became a vocal critic of war and corporate interests, famously stating, "I was a racketeer for capitalism." In 1933, he was even implicated in a plot to overthrow Franklin Roosevelt's administration. This lecture-based course explores Butler's complex legacy through the works of historians Jonathan M. Katz and Jules Archer.

    2 days, 1 night:
Do you need to commune with nature and just get away? If so, I want to take you to a magical and undiscovered gem of California— Sierra County (just north of Nevada County. We will travel via a Sierra College bus to the tiny mining town of Downieville, enjoy a picnic lunch, wander its few streets and see the infamous gallows which adorn the courthouse (the site of the only woman hanged in California). It is then off to Sierra City (population: 99) to tour the historic Kentucky Mine, a perfectly preserved gold mine and mill. This is the best spots to fully understand the entire gold mining process— mining to ingot. We will stay at the rustic Sierra Pines Lodge overlooking the North Fork of the Yuba River in Sierra City. It is a special spot you are bound to return to! The day is capped-off with waterfront cocktails and a five-star dinner at the magnificent Sardine Lake Lodge set amongst the Sierra Buttes high in the Sierras. The next morning, following a hearty breakfast at Sierra Pines (you can catch your fresh trout in their pond and they’ll cook it up), we will drive and tour the quaint red and white colored mill town of Graeagle then drive through the spectacular Sierra Valley on our way to Hobart Mills - the remote Donner Party encampment. A picnic lunch will be provided to enjoy in this beautiful meadow. Minimal walking over the two days.

Note: Because the lodge is small (it is the largest lodging in Sierra County), we can only accommodate double occupancy, so if single— find a friend to share a room or let us know and hopefully there is someone else that needs a roommate. (All meals, transportation and accommodations included; except bar costs at Sardine Lodge).

Join Terry McAteer as he puts a realistic historic interpretation of the industrialized Gold Rush period. After the gold pans and the rocker boxes had been sent to the attic, the later gold rush period (late 1850’s onwards) produced huge amounts of gold to help fund the Civil War and the Gilded Age. Two of the most productive mines in the U.S. sit just a few miles apart in Grass Valley and we will visit both to gain a greater understanding of this glorious industrial era for mine owners but not so glorious for mine workers. The Museum also features large Old California Style paintings, a Victorian bedroom, Lola Montez’s bathtub, a table used for the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945 and many instruments and medicine from Dr. Jones the first doctor in Grass Valley. Today you can almost hear the echoes of children reciting their lessons as you stand behind the teacher’s desk in the restored classroom.

These tours are limited to six people. There are ten steps to the second floor where the Museum is located. Tours are estimated to last 90 minutes. The Grass Valley Museum is located at 410 South Church Street, Grass Valley, two blocks from the historic downtown. Participants will provide their own transportation to and from the event. Registered members will meet instructor at location.

These historic tunnels are a living testament to the Chinese workers who blasted through this solid granite. We will also see the spectacular Chinese Wall along with discussing this important thoroughfare which saw Native Americans, 49ers, Lincoln Highway auto traffic and, eventually, Highway 40.

    • The one-mile (roundtrip) hike is flat.

For most of the first 150 years of our republic, most presidents were laid to rest at their estates or in a church graveyards near their homes. For the most part their gravesites are relatively simple and unadorned with a few exceptions. With the development of presidential libraries, the graves of some of our recent presidents are presented in monumental splendor.

If you think today is filled with divisiveness between red and blue then you should have lived in America the latter part of the 19th Century. The end of the Civil War with 700,000 American dead began this era of angst. The post-war era coupled with the acrimony between a growing divide between the haves and have-nots led to labor unrest and a complete revisioning of democracy in this country. The parallels are amazing! Taught by Terry McAteer
    *Class Dates: 7/15 & 7/16.
