- American History: The Civil War Years (1861-1865)
-
Fee: $65.00
Dates: 10/25/2023 - 12/13/2023
Times: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Days: W
Building: SP982
Room: Theater
Instructor: Chester Caskey
The American Civil War was so devastating that in a United States of 31 million people there was not a family (North of South) that did not feel the shadow of death's fall. More Americans died in the Civil War than in all other American Wars combined to date, and the crippling injuries, amputations, cases of veteran drug addiction have never been satisfactorily tabulated. The damage to the infrastructure of the American South would take a century to repair. Obstreperous political leaders in both the North and South would refuse to compromise obdurate positions even when military leaders on both sides asked for a cessation of the violence and multiple leaders from both sides offered plans for peace. Join us as we discuss the politics, battles, tragedies, and (perhaps) lessons of the American Civil War.

The vast majority of mountain ranges worldwide are composed of rocks that formed at deep levels within Earth's crust. Yet, they are exposed at high elevations today. To resolve these basic field relations, slow-rate geologic processes such as crystallization, sedimentation, metamorphic diffusion, tectonic uplift, and erosion must be invoked. These observations along with field studies can only be explained by long-lived, geologic time associated processes. This class will discuss the concept of geologic time and provide geologic examples of why deep rocks are found in high places.

Plate tectonics is considered the unifying theory of the Earth sciences. Although a relatively young theory having been introduced in the 1960s, a true revolution or paradigm shift in scientific thinking about the origins of the Earth and evolution resulted from plate tectonic theory. A combination of earlier theories such as continental drift and seafloor spreading, plate tectonics today integrates and explains an exceptionally wide range of Earth features and processes ultimately addressing the truly dynamic nature of planet Earth. Topics discussed in this class will include the history of plate tectonic theory, tectonic plates and rocks, tectonic processes and features, plate tectonic case studies, and supercontinent formation and breakup.

The Spokane area has a fascinating and diverse geologic history! Starting with an ancient 1.8 billion year old supercontinent to 1.4 billion year old marine rocks to 100 million year old intrusions of magma. Now, fast forward to the Eocene Epoch 50 million years ago when the Pacific Northwest experienced changing tectonic plate movements causing extension, uplift of the crust, and a resulting metamorphic core complex. But wait, there is more! Our region documents the huge outpourings of Columbia River flood basalt, culminating with the recent ice age and catastrophic Missoula Floods. Spokane is a Disneyland of geologic history, and this class will take you on an exciting ride through time.
Students must provide their own transportation for the field trip. October 18, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The ukulele has recently made a huge comeback in popularity and is the easiest of all string instruments to learn to play. It is also suitable for all types of music. These three 2-hour classes are designed for absolute beginners (or those that know only a few chords). Our emphasis will be on fun rather than theory and no prior music experience is needed. We will begin with simple, familiar tunes, and spend our time learning a few simple chords that will allow you to play literally hundreds of songs. We will spend time on the care and feeding of your ukulele as well. A 50-page handout will be provided, but you need to have your own ukulele and tuner. I do have a couple of loaner ukuleles and you can email scott.hallett@scc.spokane.edu to reserve one, if one is still available.
Please call (509) 533-8500 to enroll. This class is within the two day window and online registration is closed.

Room: Walter S. Johnson Sports Center Bldg 5 Rm 147
Instructor: Scott Hallett
Bring tunable ukulele. Paid parking not required.
