Between 1346-1353 the devastating pandemic, later known as The Black Death, ravaged its way across Medieval Europe. No aspect of society remained untouched by the catastrophe. By the time the plague had run its course, one half of the population was dead, and the western world was forever transformed. In this series of lectures, class will begin with an overview of life as it existed in mid-14th century Europe of the eve of the crisis. Then class will examine the origins and spread of the Black Death, discussing the ways in which medieval society was fundamentally altered by the outbreak. Political structures, religious and family life, art, literature, food, medicine, and the minutia of social behavior were radically reshaped as an increasingly desperate population sought, not only to survive the disease, but to make sense of their upended world. We will consider a variety of responses to the plague by different communities as they experienced it and listen to the words of those who wrote about it. When the devastation of the Black Death was over, a new Modern World was ready to emerge.

The United States Constitution of 1787 was designed to set the limits of defined Federal Law in balance with the laws of the several states, including some (but not all) pronouncements of individual citizens' rights. However, in the last 240 years, Federal Laws passed by Congress in the 53 titles of the United States Code and Code of Federal Regulations have grown to the extent that experts estimate there are 5,000 federal "statutes" and as many as 300,000 separate "regulations" that not only are intended to govern individual behavior but which also encroach upon many areas traditionally covered by individual states' laws. This class historically defines and delineates the legal boundaries of United States Federal Law in a clear and easily understood manner valuable for every citizen and voter. Americans are not and should not be required to attend Law School or watch cable news commentators to understand the "Law of the Land".

    Class will not meet 2/17.
