- American History: The Great Depression (1929-1941)
-
Not the longest economic depression in U.S. history, but definitely the most severe and heart-breaking, the period of 1929-1941 well-deserves the moniker of 'The Great Depression'. At home, the Dust Bowl of 1931 -1939, insect infestations, 25% unemployment, drought, the collapse of agriculture, the end of Prohibition and many social experiments by the great devotee of Woodrow Wilson, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, were all punctuated by happenings abroad with the rise of fascism, the Spanish Civil War and economic warfare with Japan. What a decade! Join us as we refresh our parents' memories of this interesting time in American History.
Each class is a standalone student experience with no prerequisites for a complete learning activity. Class will not meet 4/30.

With the unexpected presidency of Theodore Roosevelt in 1901 after the assassination of America's Gilded Age beloved president William McKinley, the so-called "Progressive Era" of American History began. Worker security, Women's Voting Rights, and Social Sobriety were all substantially improved - but Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilsons' ideas of "the Progressive Era" were not necessarily what 21st Century Americans would call "progressive" in retrospect. After promising that America would not become involved in a European War on the eve of his re-election in 1916, President Wilson got the U.S. into the very conflict he promised to avoid at the cost of over 100,000 lives of soldiers, sailors and aviators. The Spanish Flu Pandemic cost the lives of 800,000 Americans without the president even acknowledging an emergency existed. The Lochner Era of the U.S. Supreme Court was an attempt by the conservative justices to defeat the Progressive Era's new laws and return the country to the Gilded Age. Join us for the play by play as the U.S. struggled to become civilized.

- American History: The Roaring 20's (1920-1929)
-
In the Election of 1920, Warren G. Harding promised a "return to normalcy" if elected, and he was indeed elected by an American public tired of war, pandemic, arguments over the League of Nations, a bedfast paralyzed president who governed by supposed messages from the First Lady, and the marches of suffragettes - but what was "normal" was another thing altogether in the "Roaring Twenties". The short but terrible Depression of 1920, natural disasters, bootleg liquor, gangland shootouts, and a disturbingly popular Ku Klux Klan nation-wide counterbalanced one of the most prosperous and innovative periods of American History. New appliances, electrified cities, and the purchase of money-making stocks and bonds by everyone (on margin, of course) was the song of America. When President Harding suddenly died of an undiagnosed heart disease, vice-president "Cool Calvin" Coolidge became "Silent Cal" through one and a half Administrations, before well-liked international hero Herbert Hoover's election in 1928. All was speakeasy, flapper and hero-hoodlum fun - that is until Black Monday, October 28, 1929

- Nei Yang Gong
-
Known as 'Nourishing the Interior from Within', Nei Yang Gong strengthens the bones and tendons. It is also very helpful for creating balance of the four limbs, harmonizing the organs, and improving blood circulation. The form was developed by Dr. Liu Gui Zhen in 1965 as an expansion of the ancient practice of the Eight Pieces of Brocade (Eight Treasures). This form works to connect the energy of the lungs and kidneys to increase oxygen levels and improve energy. Our movement will pay attention to the gentle stretching, rotation, and extension of the spinal column. This is an excellent method for prevention and treatment of conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, digestive problems, hypertension and pain in the lower back and joints. Come join us to learn this very graceful and relaxing form!
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes are encouraged.

- Solar Energy Basics - Hybrid Course
-
Fee: $27.00
Dates: 4/14/2025 - 5/10/2025
Times: 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
Days: Sa
Building:
Room:
Instructor: Zbigniew Radzimski
In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the development and use of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) energy in both industrial and residential applications. The increase is accounted for both by economic considerations and environmental concerns. This course is designed for beginners interested in investing in their own solar systems (e.g. homes, recreational vehicles, boats, etc.), as well as people seeking to enhance their knowledge in solar electric power production and PV systems. We will start with the fundamentals of solar energy conversion and solar cell operation. We will calculate the size of solar array for selected applications and select the correct components for the Solar PV system. The economics of solar cell applications, especially in our Northwest region will also be covered.
Are you interested in solar energy? Does going solar make sense for you? Do you go solar on your own or do you pay someone? What can you expect to spend if you do it yourself? What are reasonable prices if you pay to have someone come? In this class, you will learn about solar energy and have all your solar questions answered in a series of prerecorded lectures and two hands-on workshop field trips with Dr. Zbigniew Radzimski (Dr. Z). Dr. Z invites those who have some knowledge of solar already and those who are turning down the solar road for the first time. This class is great for busy individuals who like to learn independently and those who want to talk with an expert and see solar in practical application.
Class Notes:
- April 14th - April 25th: Access four, 30-minute pre-recorded lectures on Canvas.
- April 26th 10am-12pm: Meet at the SCC campus for a Q&A with Dr. Z, and to view solar array components.
- April 27th- May 9th: Access four, 30-minute pre-recorded lectures on Canvas.
- May 10th 10am-12pm: Tour residential and commercial solar installations.

The ukulele has recently made a huge comeback in popularity and is the easiest of all string instruments to learn to play. It is also suitable for all types of music. These three 2-hour classes are designed for absolute beginners (or those that know only a few chords). Our emphasis will be on fun rather than theory and no prior music experience is needed. We will begin with simple, familiar tunes, and spend our time learning a few simple chords that will allow you to play literally hundreds of songs. We will spend time on the care and feeding of your ukulele as well. A 50-page handout will be provided, but you need to have your own ukulele and tuner. I do have a couple of loaner ukuleles and you can email scott.hallett@scc.spokane.edu to reserve one, if one is still available.
