Humans are remarkably creative in developing medicines for a range of ailments, which raises the question: How do non-human animals find the medicines they need? Many animals do exactly what we do – they pay a visit to their local “pharmacy.” For animals, that pharmacy is represented by the medicinal qualities of the food that they eat. Chimpanzees, birds, crustaceans, and insects can all derive medicinal benefits from what they eat. With a focus on self-medication in monarch butterflies, this lecture will explore how animals use medicinal plants and what we can learn about human drug discovery by watching them.

The BBC/PBS series The Hollow Crown (2012) adapted four sequential Shakespeare English History plays in mini-series style. We’ll watch the series and (ideally) read the Shakespeare plays (Richard II, two parts of Henry IV, and Henry V). We’ll ponder Shakespeare’s nuanced and rueful look at leadership and the price to be paid for different leadership styles. The opulent series stars Jeremy Irons, Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Judy Dench, and an A-List of British actors. Please watch the first episode before the first class, the second before the second, etc.
