Time travel to the 18th century and experience a day in London through the words of Jonathan Swift ("Description of the Morning" and "Description of a City Shower") and the engravings of William Hogarth ("Four Times of the Day"). No doubt you will be happy to return to 21st-century convenience (not to mention hygiene) but you will also see why Swift and Hogarth's contemporary Samuel Johnson would say: "He who is tired of London is tired of life!" It was (and remains) a vibrant, varied place!

Edna St. Vincent Millay was arguably the most popular American poet of the 1920s and '30s, yet today only scholars and staunch admirers know her. A Pulitzer prize winner and proponent of justice, free speech (and behavior), and women's rights, she wrote masterly poems, plays, short stories, and essays. This discussion-oriented class will focus on poems that illustrate her range of subjects, ideas, moods, and forms. No required textbook or homework.

This session will feature a variety of techniques that Chris Greer uses to find unique compositions and capture landscapes in ways that viewers appreciate and remember. He will talk about the gear he uses, his approach to finding locations and good light, as well as the things he thinks about out in the field and also when he is doing my post-processing. There are many images that he plans weeks or even months in advance, and others that are captured with a fair amount of serendipity. He will also talk about his PBS show “View Finders,” which chronicles the adventures of two photographers in search of beautiful locations to photograph. Chris wrote and photographed the best-selling book, View Finders, upon which the PBS show is based.

When Ebola or COVID break out, news sources say, "Scientists' maps predict the disease will spread in these places first." How do health officials know this? This class is an introduction to Geographic Information Science (GIS) and to some ways it's applied in health fields to predict and control disease. Maps also tell a story about the long-term health effects of political and economic decisions. We’ll look also at which maps and data are easily available online that can help you understand important facts about where you live now, like issues of water quality, crime, flooding, toxic waste, etc.

The German Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) has long been admired for his brilliance, faith, and courage in the face of evil. It was almost 80 years ago that he was executed by the Nazis for his role in the resistance to Hitler, and yet many have found that his message and example are still deeply relevant today, especially for American Christians seeking to understand the times and respond faithfully. Join us as we explore his life and writings, and consider the challenge that he squarely places before us.

Experiential education is best seen as we are doing some activity. Travel is one of the most natural ways to learn because it is so stimulating to the brain. We will discuss this phenomenon and discuss the overall impact of seeing travel as an educational foray. Roberson lived in Croatia for 8 years and in the Czech Republic for 12. We will discuss and focus on the main idea of his book: that travel is schooling.
