Develop basic skills in sign and finger spelling to help you communicate with Deaf individuals in everyday situations by learning American Sign Language (ASL).
Week 1: Intro to Deaf culture, Fingerspelling, Numbers, How are you?, Personal Pronouns/Possessives, Family Members, When/Day/Month
Week 2: Seasons, Clothes, Animals, Foods, School subjects, sports
Week 3: Housing, weather, movies, places, Verbs, adjectives, money, time, holidays.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate foundational ASL communication skills by accurately fingerspelling the manual alphabet, using numbers 1-100, and signing common vocabulary related to daily life topics including family, food, clothing, places, and time expressions.
- Engage in basic conversational exchanges with Deaf individuals using appropriate personal pronouns, possessives, and simple questions (such as greetings and inquiries about well-being), while demonstrating awareness of proper ASL grammar and sentence structure.
- Describe key aspects of Deaf culture and explain why cultural awareness is essential for respectful communication with the Deaf community, including understanding Deaf identity, values, and communication preferences.
