Join us for an introduction to nature’s most accessible, melodious, and beautiful creatures. The pursuit of birding can be for relaxation, sport, or citizen science, but in any form will enhance your enjoyment of nature, whether in your backyard or favorite vacation spot.
May 6 - A Short History of Birding and a Look at Bird Design. We introduce the practice of birding, its history and culture, and then offer some basic ornithology and extraordinary facts.
May 13 - Birding Tools. We describe the birder’s most useful tools, including guidebooks, online resources and apps, such as eBird and Merlin (both free from Cornell University), and how to select and properly use binoculars. If you have a pair, bring them this night. If you don’t, no worries! I’ll bring a few extra, and we can share.

Whether you are a novice or intermediate painter, gain skills in color harmony, mixing, tinting, and shading. As we focus on outdoor painting, learning how to capture the geological wonders surrounding the Capitol Reef Field Station. Instruction will focus on oil painting methods. If you are an experienced painting in watercolor, you will still gain even more knowledge in this oil paint medium. A mandatory pre-trip planning meeting will be held one week prior to the trip. Start with the basics of sewing and the mechanics and care of your sewing machine. Learn how to read and use a commercial pattern and how to choose fabrics. Master seam finishing, casings, hems, ruffling, and buttonholes. Projects include pillowcase, pajama pants, and an apron.
