Experience the wonders of night sky photography in this immersive course at our Capitol Reef Field Station. Learn essential techniques for capturing the beauty of the night sky with expert guidance. Surrounded by some of the darkest skies, you'll have the perfect environment to focus entirely on enhancing your photography skills. A mandatory pre-trip planning meeting will be held one week prior to the trip. Food and lodging will be provided. Transportation is not provided.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify basic camera settings and equipment used for night sky photography.
- Practice simple techniques for capturing stars and night sky scenes in low-light conditions.
- Apply foundational planning skills to prepare for a night sky photography outing.

Still life is the best way to learn how to paint realistically, and is as simple or creative as you wish because you are in control. Learn object selection, staging, composing, paint handling, color mixing, and value control. Paint anything from a childhood toy, a family heirloom, or even your favorite food, you get to choose. All skill levels are welcome.
Learning Outcomes:
- Select and arrange objects to create a simple still life composition.
- Practice basic paint handling, color mixing, and value control techniques.
- Apply observational skills to paint everyday objects with greater realism

In this hands-on class, students will learn how to make a reusable silicone mold from a small object of their choice—such as a natural treasure, a favorite button, or another textured item. Then, using silver metal clay, you’ll press your mold, refine your design, and transform it into a beautiful fine silver pendant or charm. Join us for an introduction to nature’s most accessible, melodious, and beautiful creatures. The pursuit of birding can be for relaxation, sport, or citizen science, but in any form will enhance your enjoyment of nature, whether in your backyard or favorite vacation spot.
May 6 - A Short History of Birding and a Look at Bird Design. We introduce the practice of birding, its history and culture, and then offer some basic ornithology and extraordinary facts.
May 13 - Birding Tools. We describe the birder’s most useful tools, including guidebooks, online resources and apps, such as eBird and Merlin (both free from Cornell University), and how to select and properly use binoculars. If you have a pair, bring them this night. If you don’t, no worries! I’ll bring a few extra, and we can share.
