Program Overview |
As the world becomes increasingly more complicated, so does the need for innovative, automated ways of learning and problem solving. Companies will either embrace AI/ML today or get left behind tomorrow. Successful organizations rely on professionals who can build and manage complex systems to provide solutions and insights that take into account millions of data points, variations, anomalies, and potential outcomes to create strategic competitive advantage.
This program introduces participants to the fundamentals of AI and machine consciousness, including automated approaches to problem-solving, natural language processing, perception, planning, learning, motion, manipulation, and social behavior. They learn logic, search, optimization, and probabilistic methods and tools for uncertain reasoning to increase agility, enhance efficiency, improve predictability, and personalize more rewarding and profitable customer experiences. |
Learning Outcomes |
- Understand what it means for a machine to possess (some level of) general intelligence
- Compare and contrast biological and artificial brains
- Distinguish between various approaches to artificial intelligences in gaming (e.g. chess)
- Recognize common interaction with AI in society
- Reflect upon ideas relating to the Turing Test and how it relates to modern society
- Distinguish between supervised and unsupervised learning
- Describe a variety of approaches to machine learning
- Understand the different types of artificial neural networks
- Select an appropriate type of neural network for a given application
|
Student Profiles |
Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are a ubiquitous feature of daily life. AI is used in marketing to create targeted advertisements. It is the technology that makes deep-fake videos possible. It is even used in art and music. Machine learning (ML) is an important approach to AI technology. You may have heard the phrase neural network discussed at your place of work. Whether you work in healthcare, real estate investing, manufacturing, or any of numerous fields where automation is occurring, you could benefit from introductory knowledge of AI and ML. This course is designed to give you an engaging, hands-on introduction to important topics in AI and ML. Digital literacy and a basic knowledge of mathematics are helpful but not required. All that is required is a willingness to learn. This course does not have any pre-requisites. Class will meet once a week in the evening from 6pm until 9pm for ten weeks. Expect approximately one hour of study outside of class per week.
|
Program Schedule |
Understand the benefits AI/ML can offer your business or organization. Distinguish between various deep learning approaches and methodologies and identify the appropriate type of artificial neural networks for a given problem or application. Provide invaluable access to data-driven decision making for more innovative, competitive solutions. Prepare to sit for the AI-100 professional designation exam and/or the MS AI-102 professional designation exam on your way to working as a Microsoft AI Engineer.
This course runs one day a week for 10 weeks over Zoom, from 6-9pm.
|
Session 1 :: What is Artificial Intelligence? |
In this session, you will be introduced to various appearances of artificial intelligence (AI), including mathematical theorem proving and game playing. We will discuss the inflexibility of machine behavior and contrast our observations with philosophical definitions of general (human, or biologic) intelligence. We will study popular theories of mind, and discuss whether machines can have feelings. We will conclude with a survey of how close modern technology is to passing the Turing Test. |
Session 2 :: What is Machine Learning? |
In this session, you will be introduced to the basic concepts of machine learning. You will explore the strengths and weaknesses of supervised and unsupervised machine learning. We will discuss the role that optimization plays in machine learning. We will discuss limitations of machine learning, including the so-called curse of dimensionality. |
Session 3 :: Automated Problem Solving |
The four color theorem states that no more than four colors are required to color the regions of any map so that no two adjacent regions have the same color. This was the first major mathematical theorem to be proven with extensive computer assistance. In this lesson we will discuss why this and other problems are hard, and study how automated processes can help to solve such hard problems. |
Session 4 :: Optimization
|
The term satisficing is a portmanteau of “satisfy” and “suffice”. If you are hungry and you walk into a grocery store you will probably grab the first snack that suffices to satisfy your hunger. Would it be better to inspect every single item in the store before picking the optimal item? Here we talk about strengths and weakness of optimization. We cover the statistical principles of maximum likelihood and maximum entropy. We discuss why constrained, non-convex optimization problems are hard to solve. We study the role of optimization in curve fitting, and explore whether modern techniques for causal inference can produce smarter machines. |
Session 5 :: Uncertainty
|
Recently, loophole-free Bell-inequality experiments have been conducted to demonstrate that Einstein was not correct when he famously claimed “God does not play dice.” In this lesson we will study whether or not there is inherent randomness in nature and measurement. We will cover the basic idea of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and experience uncertain physical measurement. Finally, we will discuss the advantages of adopting the language of probability theory and statistics when describing the world around us. |
Session 6 :: Regression
|
In this session, you will study the details of how we fit mathematical functions to observed data. We will discuss regression analysis in high dimensions and also nonlinear models. We will discuss the distinction between deterministic chaos and random noise. We will briefly discuss time series models. Our goal is to understand the basic mathematics behind models that are linear in their parameters. |
Session 7 :: The Feed-Forward Neural Network
|
A neural network generalizes regression in a direction of non-linearity inspired by the way biological brains work. In this introductory lesson we will study the most basic neural network, the feed-forward neural network. |
Session 8 :: Clustering
|
K-means clustering is a technique for partitioning n objects into k clusters, optimally. Here we will study how it can be used for vector quantization, cluster analysis, and feature learning. |
Session 9 :: Applications of Machine Learning |
In this session, we will study some successful applications of machine learning technology, including game playing, handwriting recognition, fraud detection, language translation, fake videos, and musical composition. We will also study and debate the suitability of machine learning in the field of healthcare. |
Session 10 :: Casual AI |
This final session will survey some of the frontiers in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. We will discuss problems that arise from attempts to create contextual AI. We will discuss how Turing-award winner Judea Pearl’s causal calculus attempts to expand machine learning beyond curve fitting. We will learn how to progress up the ladder of causality from thinking about mere associations, to thinking about interventions, and finally to thinking about counterfactuals. We will explore whether or not AI can likewise elevate their thinking processes. |

EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF AI
This course provides an introduction to the basic ideas of artificial intelligence. It starts with an overview of philosophic definitions for intelligence and artificial intelligence, along with a survey of various approaches to artificial intelligence, and some discussion of machine consciousness. It surveys automated approaches to problem-solving, natural language processing, perception, planning, learning, motion and manipulation, and social interaction. It introduces tools such as logic, search, optimization, and probabilistic methods for uncertain reasoning.
This course also provides an overview of basic techniques within the field of machine learning, thought of as a subfield of artificial intelligence. For instance, students will study the distinction between supervised and unsupervised learning. Students will gain familiarity with the ideas of semi-supervised learning, reinforcement learning, deep learning, and meta learning, along with anomaly detection and association rule learning. Students will study a catalog of artificial neural networks, including the simple feedforward neural network, the radial basis function network, recurrent neural networks, modular neural networks, and dynamic neural networks.
