Program Overview |
Historically, the practice of law has been reserved only for those who have obtained a Juris Doctorate ("J.D.") and who have passed the Bar Exam. However, in addition to attorneys, Utah now issues a limited license to practice law to individuals who have satisfied all the education, experience, and testing requirements set forth in the Rules Governing Licensed Paralegal Practitioners ("Rules"). For all the requirements to become a Licensed Paralegal Practitioner, please see Rule 15-703 of the Utah Rules of Professional Responsibility for LPP's. For more detailed information about becoming a licensed paralegal practitioner visit the Utah State Bar website.

Learning Outcomes |
This course focuses on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) including the protections for consumers and requirements on creditors. Issues covered include the purpose of the FDCPA and the types of debts covered; debt collection practices prohibited by the FDCP; unfair debt collection practices. The course will emphasize substantive law, forms, and procedures approved for Limited License Paralegals practicing in Utah. Ideally, students will take this course shortly after completing 1500 hours as a paralegal (with 100 focused on debt collection law) and shortly before taking the licensing exam.

Jacob Kent
Jacob Kent graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2011. He started his legal career representing victims of domestic violence with protective orders, divorce, and custody actions. Jacob joined Utah Legal Services in 2014 as a staff attorney. He currently works in its housing and consumer units. He represents tenants in housing authority administrative proceedings. He also represents tenants in state eviction proceedings, including tenants that live in federally subsidized properties, section 42 properties, and mobile homes. Jacob is currently a member of the Utah State Bar, Utah Court Committee on Resources for Self-represented Parties, and Adjunct Faculty Member of Utah Valley University.

The Digital Literacy Course is a self-paced online program powered by Pluralsight with a UVU faculty facilitator. In this course, students learn how to utilize digital tools to produce projects, solve problems, and enhance communications. Digital tools covered include the Microsoft Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Vision, and Excel. Students learn to collaborate through Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and Skype, and grow their creative skills using Adobe Photoshop Fix and Illustrator. In addition, students learn to access data by using a basic SQL database, how to create a basic website using HTML and CSS, and the fundamentals of information security.

This unit is broken down into four modules: Grammar (writing in complete sentences and avoiding run-ons, parallel structure, agreement issues, pronoun shifts, and commonly confused words); Concision (simplifying, trimming the fat, active vs. passive voice, avoiding redundancy, staying relevant, and having a strong main point); Punctuation (commas for joining FANBOYS, commas and clauses, commas and interjections, commas and coordinating adjectives, the Oxford comma, commas and non-essential elements, dashes, parentheses, apostrophes, colons, semi-colons); and Tone (purpose, audience, choice, diction, professional emails, PPPP-Plan, parallel structure, ethos, logos, pathos, misplaced modifiers, dangling modifiers, and proofreading).

Instructor Bio |
Sharee Laidlaw
Sharee Laidlaw teaches the Ethics for Licensed Paralegal Practitioners at Utah Valley University. In addition, she teaches Legal Ethics in the master’s in legal studies program at the S.J. Quinney School of Law at the University of Utah. She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1990 and the Utah State Bar in 1994. Sharee clerked for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena California and worked for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office before entering private law practice. Sharee has worked mainly in the areas of domestic law, private adoptions, probate, and estate planning in law firms and as a sole practitioner. After an 18-year career in the law, Sharee discovered her true calling when she began teaching in the Salt Lake Community College, Legal Studies program in 1997. Sharee served on two committees for the creation of the Licensed Paralegal Practitioner program through the Utah Supreme Court and Sharee believes that besides being a parent, teaching is the most important and rewarding job she has ever had. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology from California State University-Los Angeles and her Juris Doctorate from Southwestern University School of Law in 1989.

Christopher Martinez
Christopher Martinez has been a domestic relations staff attorney with Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake since to present. He feels privileged to work with future LPP's in this professional course through Utah Valley University and to take a small role in facilitating the positive impact you will be able to have in the lives of people and their families in your future career. He was a paralegal in the Family Law Clinic for Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake County while preparing for the Bar exam. Christopher has worked exclusively in the area of family law and, through working at a non-profit, is very aware of the potential for LLP's to bring legal services to areas where there are physical and financial obstacles for the public to access legal services. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Utah in 2008 and his Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in 2011.

Jacob Kent graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2011. He started his legal career representing victims of domestic violence with protective orders, divorce, and custody actions. Jacob joined Utah Legal Services in 2014 as a staff attorney. He currently works in its housing and consumer units. He represents tenants in housing authority administrative proceedings. He also represents tenants in state eviction proceedings, including tenants that live in federally subsidized properties, section 42 properties, and mobile homes. Jacob is currently a member of the Utah State Bar, Utah Court Committee on Resources for Self-represented Parties, and Adjunct Faculty Member of Utah Valley University.

Embark on an exciting new career path by becoming a Respiratory Therapist Aid (RTAs) in a growing and needed medical field. RTAs will work closely with Respiratory Therapists to carry out assignments to benefit patients. Join UVU Executive Education and Intermountain Healthcare for a 4-week Respiratory Therapy Aid certification program. This program will include Didactic learning, Lab practice, Clinical rotations, Competency skills pass-offs (lab and clinical rotations), and potential employment recruitment. Participants are required to attend the face-to-face class and the assigned site clinicals. Respiratory Therapist Aid is designed for those looking to enter the health care professions in an important and needed role. RTAs are required by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and College of American Pathologists to possess a high school diploma. No previous health care experience is needed to excel in this course. Program Overview |
Street and Air Critical Care (StACC) instructors include physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, flight medics, and flight nurses. 24 different critical care subjects are covered including ventilator management, lab data interpretation, radiographic image analysis, 12 lead EKG interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring, circulatory assist device management, advanced pharmacology, and more. StACC is divided into two sections. The first section provides in-depth instruction in the 24 different subjects with lectures, reading assignments, and quizzes The second section includes a summarized review of the specific content students will see on national critical care certification exams and a practice exam with answer rationales.
StACC is approved by the International Board for Specialty Certifications (IBSC) for 60 CME units toward renewal of the FPC or CCPC. StACC CME units are also recognized by the State of Utah Bureau of EMS. Participants are required to purchase the textbook "Patient Transport: Principles and Practice (5th ed)".
This course is for experienced paramedics and nurses needing in-depth instruction on critical care transport and who are preparing to take national critical care transport certification exams.

This course focuses on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) including the protections for consumers and requirements on creditors. Issues covered include the purpose of the FDCPA and the types of debts covered; debt collection practices prohibited by the FDCP; unfair debt collection practices. The course will emphasize substantive law, forms, and procedures approved for Limited License Paralegals practicing in Utah. Ideally, students will take this course shortly after completing 1500 hours as a paralegal (with 100 focused on debt collection law) and shortly before taking the licensing exam.

Jacob Kent
Jacob Kent graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2011. He started his legal career representing victims of domestic violence with protective orders, divorce, and custody actions. Jacob joined Utah Legal Services in 2014 as a staff attorney. He currently works in its housing and consumer units. He represents tenants in housing authority administrative proceedings. He also represents tenants in state eviction proceedings, including tenants that live in federally subsidized properties, section 42 properties, and mobile homes. Jacob is currently a member of the Utah State Bar, Utah Court Committee on Resources for Self-represented Parties, and Adjunct Faculty Member of Utah Valley University.

Program Overview |
Historically, the practice of law has been reserved only for those who have obtained a Juris Doctorate ("J.D.") and who have passed the Bar Exam. However, in addition to attorneys, Utah now issues a limited license to practice law to individuals who have satisfied all the education, experience, and testing requirements set forth in the Rules Governing Licensed Paralegal Practitioners ("Rules"). For all the requirements to become a Licensed Paralegal Practitioner, please see Rule 15-703 of the Utah Rules of Professional Responsibility for LPP's. For more detailed information about becoming a licensed paralegal practitioner visit the Utah State Bar website.
Exams are offered by the Utah State Bar and all requirements must be complete prior to practicing law.

This is an online, self-paced course housed on Canvas. You will have 18 weeks to complete the course material. This course explores the ethical standards for Licensed Paralegal Practitioner (LPP's). The focus will be on the ethical rules for LPP's as well as actual problems that LPP's will confront in their practice. Instructor Bio |
Sharee Laidlaw
Sharee Laidlaw teaches the Ethics for Licensed Paralegal Practitioners at Utah Valley University. In addition, she teaches Legal Ethics in the master’s in legal studies program at the S.J. Quinney School of Law at the University of Utah. She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1990 and the Utah State Bar in 1994. Sharee clerked for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena California and worked for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office before entering private law practice. Sharee has worked mainly in the areas of domestic law, private adoptions, probate, and estate planning in law firms and as a sole practitioner. After an 18-year career in the law, Sharee discovered her true calling when she began teaching in the Salt Lake Community College, Legal Studies program in 1997. Sharee served on two committees for the creation of the Licensed Paralegal Practitioner program through the Utah Supreme Court and Sharee believes that besides being a parent, teaching is the most important and rewarding job she has ever had. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology from California State University-Los Angeles and her Juris Doctorate from Southwestern University School of Law in 1989.

Program Overview |
Historically, the practice of law has been reserved only for those who have obtained a Juris Doctorate ("J.D.") and who have passed the Bar Exam. However, in addition to attorneys, Utah now issues a limited license to practice law to individuals who have satisfied all the education, experience, and testing requirements set forth in the Rules Governing Licensed Paralegal Practitioners ("Rules"). For all the requirements to become a Licensed Paralegal Practitioner, please see Rule 15-703 of the Utah Rules of Professional Responsibility for LPP's. For more detailed information about becoming a licensed paralegal practitioner visit the Utah State Bar website.
Exams are offered by the Utah State Bar and all requirements must be complete prior to practicing law.

Learning Outcomes |
This course provides a brief overview of Utah statutes, rules, and other laws governing relationships between married couples and their offspring; this includes basic elements of marriage, divorce, alimony, property distribution, and child custody. The course places an emphasis on substantive law, forms, and procedures utilized by LPP's in assisting people in matters of divorce, child custody, and other family laws in Utah. Ideally, students will take this course shortly after completing 1500 hours as a paralegal (with 500 focused on family law) and shortly before taking the licensing exam. |

Christopher Martinez
Christopher Martinez has been a domestic relations staff attorney with Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake since to present. He feels privileged to work with future LPP's in this professional course through Utah Valley University and to take a small role in facilitating the positive impact you will be able to have in the lives of people and their families in your future career. He was a paralegal in the Family Law Clinic for Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake County while preparing for the Bar exam. Christopher has worked exclusively in the area of family law and, through working at a non-profit, is very aware of the potential for LLP's to bring legal services to areas where there are physical and financial obstacles for the public to access legal services. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Utah in 2008 and his Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in 2011.

Major topics include the Utah Fair Housing Act, Utah Fit Premises Act, Mobile Home Park Rights, and the Eviction Process. The course focuses on substantive law, forms, and procedures approved for Limited License Paralegals practicing in Utah. Jacob Kent
Jacob Kent graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2011. He started his legal career representing victims of domestic violence with protective orders, divorce, and custody actions. Jacob joined Utah Legal Services in 2014 as a staff attorney. He currently works in its housing and consumer units. He represents tenants in housing authority administrative proceedings. He also represents tenants in state eviction proceedings, including tenants that live in federally subsidized properties, section 42 properties, and mobile homes. Jacob is currently a member of the Utah State Bar, Utah Court Committee on Resources for Self-represented Parties, and Adjunct Faculty Member of Utah Valley University.

The Mission of the Skin Cancer Awareness Project (SCAN) is to raise awareness of skin cancer and increase early detection by training and certifying hairdressers in recognition of suspicious skin lesions and natural referral for clients to see a healthcare professional. SCAN knows how important hair professionals are when it comes to helping people get checked for skin cancer.

Through this course, students will learn to recognize suspicious skin lesions and natural referral for clients to see a dermatology provider. The SCAN project works with educational institutions throughout the state of Utah to help Hair Professionals have the confidence to speak up and help their clients spot skin cancer. |

Program Overview |
Street and Air Critical Care (StACC) instructors include physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, flight medics, and flight nurses. 24 different critical care subjects are covered including ventilator management, lab data interpretation, radiographic image analysis, 12 lead EKG interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring, circulatory assist device management, advanced pharmacology, and more. StACC is divided into two sections. The first section provides in-depth instruction in the 24 different subjects with lectures, reading assignments, and quizzes The second section includes a summarized review of the specific content students will see on national critical care certification exams and a practice exam with answer rationales.
StACC is approved by the International Board for Specialty Certifications (IBSC) for 60 CME units toward renewal of the FPC or CCPC. StACC CME units are also recognized by the State of Utah Bureau of EMS. Participants are required to purchase the textbook "Patient Transport: Principles and Practice (5th ed)".
This course is for experienced paramedics and nurses needing in-depth instruction on critical care transport and who are preparing to take national critical care transport certification exams.

Learning Outcomes |
The skills/outcomes to be addressed by the program are in-depth understanding of concepts for critical care transport including ventilator management, lab data interpretation, radiologic image analysis, among many others. Students will be able to prepare for the National Care Transport exam and renew their FPC and CCPC certification.

Modules in this program focus on powerful emotional intelligence topics, principles, strategies, and best practices for leaders, managers, professionals, and entrepreneurs. All sessions are online via Zoom and is a self-paced course held via Canvas.

Joshua Forsyth
Joshua previously served as an ER Nurse and ICU Nurse, Street Medic and Firefighter. Joshua has worked as an Instructor in the Paramedic Program, as the Course Coordinator of the Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Provider course, and he recently developed and coordinates the new, all online, Street & Air Critical Care course.
