Historically, the practice of law has been reserved only for those who have obtained a Juris Doctorate ("J.D.") and who have passed the Bar Exam. However, in addition to attorneys, Utah now issues a limited license to practice law to individuals who have satisfied all the education, experience, and testing requirements set forth in the Rules Governing Licensed Paralegal Practitioners ("Rules"). For all the requirements to become a Licensed Paralegal Practitioner, please see Rule 15-703 of the Utah Rules of Professional Responsibility for LPP's. Jacob Kent
Jacob Kent graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2011. He started his legal career representing victims of domestic violence with protective orders, divorce, and custody actions. Jacob joined Utah Legal Services in 2014 as a staff attorney. He currently works in its housing and consumer units. He represents tenants in housing authority administrative proceedings. He also represents tenants in state eviction proceedings, including tenants that live in federally subsidized properties, section 42 properties, and mobile homes. Jacob is currently a member of the Utah State Bar, Utah Court Committee on Resources for Self-represented Parties, and Adjunct Faculty Member of Utah Valley University.

Christopher Martinez
Christopher Martinez has been a domestic relations staff attorney with Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake since to present. He feels privileged to work with future LPP's in this professional course through Utah Valley University and to take a small role in facilitating the positive impact you will be able to have in the lives of people and their families in your future career. He was a paralegal in the Family Law Clinic for Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake County while preparing for the Bar exam. Christopher has worked exclusively in the area of family law and, through working at a non-profit, is very aware of the potential for LLP's to bring legal services to areas where there are physical and financial obstacles for the public to access legal services. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Utah in 2008 and his Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in 2011.
